ROLE OVERVIEW
Harvey is hiring a Staff Motion Designer in San Francisco to define how motion shows up across Harvey’s brand, product storytelling, launch moments, web experiences, customer education, and executive-facing creative work. The role should sit within Brand and Design, reporting into Shawn Farsai, whose current scope includes Brand Marketing and Creative leadership in San Francisco. This is a new senior IC role intended to raise the motion craft bar while still operating with the low-ego, hands-on generalist posture expected of Harvey’s senior brand hires. The role should build on existing motion and brand hiring standards, including deep portfolio review, visible process, cross-functional collaboration with PMM and Marketing, and practical assessment of prioritization under ambiguity. The person in this role will help Harvey turn complex AI product ideas into clear, memorable, and reusable motion systems that can scale across product launches, web surfaces, campaign assets, Academy or education assets, events, and internal/external storytelling.
- Own the motion design language for Harvey’s brand across launch videos, product explainers, web and campaign moments, event assets, social cuts, sales enablement, and other high-leverage creative surfaces.
- Create motion concepts, storyboards, styleframes, animatics, and final motion assets that make complex AI workflows feel clear, premium, and unmistakably Harvey.
- Partner closely with Brand, Product Marketing, Product Design, Creative Operations, and other GTM stakeholders to translate positioning, product context, and user needs into motion narratives that can ship quickly.
- Develop reusable motion systems, templates, animation principles, and production workflows so Harvey can scale motion output without reinventing the wheel on every request.
- Use judgment to scope work appropriately across polished hero moments, scrappy launch needs, quick-turnaround edits, and longer-term brand-system investments.
- Raise the craft bar for motion while remaining willing to do the unglamorous but important production work required in a fast-moving creative team.
WHAT YOU HAVE
- A strong portfolio of motion work that demonstrates storytelling, art direction, animation craft, visual systems thinking, and the ability to explain the process behind finished work.
- Deep fluency in motion design tools and workflows such as After Effects, Figma, Cinema 4D, Lottie, Rive, code-adjacent motion, or comparable production tools.
- Experience building motion for brand, product, marketing, launch, or education contexts, ideally in a product-led technology company or high-growth SaaS environment.
- A demonstrated ability to simplify complex concepts visually without overloading the viewer, including strong instincts for pacing, sequencing, hierarchy, narration, and accessibility.
- Strong cross-functional communication skills, including the ability to clarify a brief, align with PMM or Marketing goals, handle competing feedback, and prioritize multiple stakeholder requests.
- A staff-level ownership mindset: able to bring ideas, shape systems, operate through ambiguity, give and receive feedback well, and still roll up sleeves when the team needs execution support.

Motion Designer Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a motion designer in California?
Motion design has no state-issued license in California, so the path runs through education and portfolio work. Most California employers expect a bachelor's degree in animation, graphic design, or a related field from a program at a California art school or university, though strong self-taught candidates with professional-grade portfolios are regularly hired. Building a focused reel with diverse project types, including broadcast, digital, and interactive work, is the most decisive step before applying.
How much do motion designers make in California?
Motion designers in California earn a median of about $130,540 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $71,710 for the lowest 10% to over $206,160 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire motion designers in California?
Employers hiring motion designers in California right now include TikTok, Notion, and Superpower, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's concentration of entertainment studios, streaming platforms, and technology companies makes it one of the deepest markets in the country for in-house motion design roles.
Which California cities have the most motion designer jobs?
San Francisco, San Jose, and Irvine have the most motion designer openings in California. Los Angeles dominates because of its density of entertainment studios, advertising agencies, and streaming company headquarters, while San Francisco and San Diego reflect demand from technology firms and digital marketing teams that rely on motion graphics for product and brand work.
Are there remote motion designer jobs in California?
Yes, and more than most creative fields. About 40% of motion designer openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting how well the work translates to distributed workflows. Post-production, explainer video, and digital advertising projects are the most consistently remote, while broadcast and live-event design roles typically require on-site presence.
How can I get hired as a motion designer in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is a junior or associate motion designer role, which large California entertainment companies and advertising agencies post specifically for candidates with limited professional history. Building a reel through freelance projects, volunteer work with nonprofits, or spec work for real brands demonstrates practical skill when a resume is thin. Many candidates move in laterally from video editing or graphic design roles, where overlapping software skills make the transition credible to California hiring managers.
Where can I find and apply to motion designer jobs in California?
You can find and apply to motion designer jobs in California on Migrate Mate, which lists current California openings from employers across the state. Find the roles that fit your experience and specialty, then apply directly to each one.
