Project Designer Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a project designer in California?
Most project designers in California hold a bachelor's degree in architecture, interior design, industrial design, or a closely related field. Those working toward licensed architect status pursue the Architect Registration Examination through the California Architects Board, while interior designers seeking full professional standing typically complete the NCIDQ examination. Many California firms also hire project designers with strong portfolios and relevant software skills without a license, particularly in product design and commercial interiors.
How much do project designers make in California?
Project designers in California earn a median of about $82,510 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $50,200 for the lowest 10% to over $128,160 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire project designers in California?
Employers hiring project designers in California right now include Affiliated Engineers, Harley Ellis Devereaux, and HMC Architects, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's concentration of architecture, technology, and entertainment companies means demand comes from a particularly wide range of firm types and industries compared with most other states.
Which California cities have the most project designer jobs?
Los Angeles, San Francisco, and San Diego have the most project designer openings in California. Los Angeles leads because of its dense cluster of architecture, entertainment, and commercial real estate firms, San Francisco draws demand from technology-sector workplace and product design work, and San Diego's biotech and defense industries generate consistent openings for designers with technical project experience.
Are there remote project designer jobs in California?
Yes, but they're less common than in purely desk-based fields because project design typically involves site visits, physical samples, and in-person client collaboration. About 25% of project designer openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and the roles most likely to offer flexibility are those focused on design documentation, specification writing, and early-stage concept development rather than construction administration or hands-on fabrication.
How can I get hired as a project designer in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying directly to junior designer or design associate roles at large California AEC firms, which regularly hire recent graduates from programs at Cal Poly, SCI-Arc, and UC Berkeley. Gensler and AECOM both run structured new-graduate programs in their California offices. Candidates moving from drafting, design coordination, or CAD technician roles gain an advantage, and a clean portfolio showing completed studio or internship projects matters more to most California hiring managers than years of experience.
Where can I find and apply to project designer jobs in California?
You can find and apply to project designer jobs in California on Migrate Mate, which lists current California openings across architecture, interior design, product development, and AEC firms. Find roles that fit your experience and specialty and apply directly to the employers posting them.
