Tips for Your Project Designer Job Search
Tailor your portfolio to the sector
Project designers are hired across wildly different industries, and a portfolio built for residential interiors won't land you a manufacturing design role. Pull three to five projects that match the sector you're targeting and put those first.
List software tools by proficiency level
Employers scan for AutoCAD, Revit, SketchUp, or SolidWorks depending on the industry. Don't lump all tools into one line. Break them into proficient and familiar so hiring managers don't guess where you actually stand.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists project designer openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Highlight cross-functional collaboration experience
Project designers routinely work with engineers, contractors, and clients simultaneously. Your resume should name the teams you coordinated with and what you delivered together, not just your individual design tasks.
Prepare a design-process walkthrough for interviews
Most project designer interviews include a portfolio review where you narrate one project from brief to delivery. Practice explaining your decisions out loud, especially where constraints changed the direction, because that's what interviewers probe hardest.
Negotiate using deliverable scope, not just title
Project designer roles vary enormously in responsibility. Before accepting an offer, confirm what you own end-to-end versus what gets handed off. Scope directly affects your growth trajectory and gives you concrete ground for negotiating compensation.
Project Designer Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most project designers?
The companies hiring the most project designers right now include Affiliated Engineers, Cushman & Wakefield, and CHA Consulting, with the largest share of openings in California, Texas, and Florida, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Demand is concentrated at firms running active construction, product development, or interior fit-out programs.
How many project designer jobs are remote?
About 17% of project designer openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, though availability varies significantly by specialization. Roles focused on digital product design, space planning deliverables, or design documentation tend to offer the most remote flexibility, while site-dependent work in architecture and manufacturing is predominantly on-site.
How do you become a project designer?
Most project designers start with a degree in a design discipline such as architecture, industrial design, or interior design, then build hands-on experience through internships or junior roles. From there, taking ownership of progressively larger project phases, learning industry-standard software tools, and assembling a portfolio that shows complete project cycles are the steps that move you into full project designer roles.
Can you get hired as a project designer with little experience?
Yes, but you need to substitute experience with evidence. Employers hiring junior project designers look for a portfolio that shows your process, not just finished images. Academic projects, freelance work, or design competitions all count. Targeting smaller firms or design-build companies gives you a better shot at entry-level openings where you can own real project phases from day one.
What does the project designer interview process look like?
Project designer interviews typically involve an initial screening call, a portfolio review where you walk through one or two projects in detail, and a technical or take-home design exercise. Later rounds usually include a meeting with the project or design team. Interviewers focus on how you make decisions under constraints, how you communicate with clients, and how you manage revisions.
Where can I find and apply to project designer jobs?
You can find and apply to project designer jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from across the United States. Search the listings to find roles that match your background and specialization, then apply directly to each one that fits.
