We’re looking for a Director of Product Design to help shape the future of EvenUp’s product design practice. Reporting to the Head of Design, you’ll lead a small team of embedded product designers while also contributing hands-on to high-impact projects. This is a true player-coach role, with about half your time spent mentoring and growing the team and the other half leading design for strategic initiatives in close partnership with engineering, product, and AI.
This role offers broad scope and strategic influence across a modular, fast-evolving platform. You’ll support work spanning AI tools and workflow infrastructure, helping to architect cohesive, user-centered experiences in a technically complex space. It’s an opportunity to shape foundational design systems, build team culture, and make a lasting impact on the legal tech ecosystem we’re helping to define.
This is a hybrid role with the expectation of working at least 3 days a week from one of our office hubs in San Francisco or Toronto.
What you'll do:
Lead and support a team of 4+ product designers, investing in their growth, performance, and career development.
Drive hiring for open roles on your team, partnering with recruiting and design leadership to scale our design practice.
Collaborate cross-functionally with product, engineering, and data teams to define strategy, scope product opportunities, and ship high-quality solutions.
Balance management responsibilities with hands-on design work—taking ownership of critical projects that contribute directly to business goals.
Champion design excellence and foster a collaborative, feedback-rich design culture grounded in user-centered thinking and high standards of execution.
What we look for:
10+ years of experience in software product design
5+ years of experience in managing other designers.
A track record of designing impactful B2B workflow tools for complex, specialized users—experience with internal tooling and/or AI interfaces is a strong plus.
Proven ability to lead and scale a team, including hiring and developing talent.
Strong collaboration and communication skills; experience working cross-functionally with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Ability to drive clarity in ambiguous problem spaces and ship high-quality work at speed.
Benefits & Perks:
As part of our total rewards package, we offer attractive benefits and perks to our employees, including:
Choice of medical, dental, and vision insurance plans for you and your family.
Additional insurance coverage options for life, accident, or critical illness.
Flexible paid time off, sick leave, short-term and long-term disability.
10 US observed holidays, and Canadian statutory holidays by province.
A home office stipend.
401(k) for US-based employees and RRSP for Canada-based employees.
Paid parental leave.
A local in-person meet-up program.
Hubs in San Francisco and Toronto.
(Please note the above benefits & perks are for full-time employees)

Tips for Your Director Of Product Design Job Search
Tailor your portfolio for leadership
Hiring committees at the director level want to see how you shaped a team's design process, not just polished final screens. Lead each case study with the strategic problem, your decision-making, and measurable outcomes your team delivered.
Highlight your design systems experience
Many director of product design roles require owning or scaling a design system across multiple product lines. Call out specific systems you've built or governed, the tools involved, and how adoption improved design velocity or consistency across engineering teams.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists director of product design openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Target companies mid-design-maturity
Director of product design roles have the most impact and broadest scope at companies building out their design practice, not those with fully established teams. Filter for organizations that recently hired their first few designers or are scaling a product team rapidly.
Prepare a design critique example
Most interview processes include a live design critique or team portfolio review. Practice articulating not just what you'd change in a design, but why, grounding your feedback in user needs, business constraints, and the team's current capacity to execute.
Negotiate scope before title or compensation
At the director level, the team size, reporting structure, and product surface area you'll own matter more than title variations. Ask directly in late-stage conversations how many designers report to the role and which product areas you'll have final design authority over.
Director Of Product Design Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most director of product designs?
The companies hiring the most director of product designs right now include EvenUp, Replit, and Poshmark, with the largest share of openings in New York, California, and Texas, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Demand is concentrated in companies scaling their product org or launching new platform lines.
How many director of product design jobs are remote?
About 75% of director of product design openings are fully remote or hybrid as of September 2026, reflecting broad acceptance of distributed design leadership across the industry. Sub-areas like UX strategy, design operations, and systems design tend to see the highest share of remote-eligible postings compared to roles tied to hardware or in-person research programs.
How do you become a director of product design?
Most directors reach the role by first establishing a strong individual contributor record, then moving into a lead or principal designer position where they mentor others and own a product area end to end. From there, taking on direct reports, running design critiques, and owning cross-functional relationships with product and engineering builds the leadership foundation hiring managers look for at the director level.
Can you get hired as a director of product design without prior management experience?
It's possible but uncommon. Some companies will consider senior individual contributors who have informally led design on a large product surface, mentored junior designers, or driven a design system adoption effort. The strongest candidates without formal management history make their case through documented influence on team process, clear examples of cross-functional leadership, and a portfolio that shows strategic product thinking rather than execution alone.
What does the director of product design interview process look like?
The process typically runs across four to six stages. It usually starts with a recruiter screen, followed by a portfolio presentation where you walk through two or three case studies in depth. Later rounds include a design critique or take-home exercise, a leadership interview focused on how you build and develop teams, and cross-functional conversations with product management and engineering partners before a final executive discussion.
Where can I find and apply to director of product design jobs?
You can find and apply to director of product design jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from across the United States. Search the listings to find roles that match your experience and seniority, then apply directly to each one that fits.
