Job Summary:
About Zymo Research
Zymo Research is a global life science company developing molecular tools that help researchers generate better data, accelerate discovery, and advance innovations that contribute to healthier lives and a more sustainable world. For over 25 years, our products have supported scientists across DNA/RNA extraction, sample collection, epigenetics, microbiomics, NGS, infectious disease research, and beyond. We are guided by a simple belief: the beauty of science is to make things simple.
The Opportunity
Zymo Research is seeking a Brand Design Manager, Visual Systems to strengthen the company’s visual identity, creative consistency, and design systems across marketing channels. Zymo Research has a strong brand foundation, but its visual expression has developed across many teams, campaigns, and historical design decisions. This role will help bring greater cohesion, clarity, and polish to how the brand shows up across digital, print, social, campaign, product, and event touchpoints. Working closely with the Marketing Director, this person will translate Zymo Research’s brand strategy, voice, and philosophy into a practical visual communication system. The goal is not just to improve individual assets, but to build the standards, templates, and design logic that make strong creative work more consistent and scalable. Join us in making a meaningful impact!
What You’ll Own
Visual Identity & Brand Cohesion
- Refine and maintain Zymo Research’s visual identity across campaigns, social media, email, print, presentations, trade shows, product collateral, photography, and digital touchpoints.
- Translate brand strategy into clear visual principles, including typography, layout, color usage, imagery, hierarchy, iconography, and overall design philosophy.
Brand Guidelines & Templates
- Help build the next version of Zymo Research’s brand guide, moving beyond logos and colors into a practical visual system.
- Create and refine templates for recurring needs such as decks, social media, email headers, campaign assets, brochures, product sheets, event materials, and internal communications.
Creative Quality & Designer Direction
- Guide and review in-house design work to ensure strong visual hierarchy, clarity, polish, and brand consistency.
- Provide clear creative feedback and serve as a key reviewer for major brand and marketing assets.
Creative Organization
- Help organize existing templates and assets, identify outdated or inconsistent materials, and support cleaner file systems, approved examples, and version control.
- Partner with project and operations leads to improve creative intake, review, and delivery workflows.
Cross-Functional Partnership
Work closely with Marketing, Product Marketing, Scientific Communications, Social Media, Commercial, Creative, and Web/UX teams to ensure Zymo Research’s visual identity is expressed consistently across channels.
What We’re Looking For
- 5+ years of experience in brand design, visual identity, graphic design, art direction, or creative systems.
- Strong portfolio showing excellent design judgment, typography, layout, visual hierarchy, and brand consistency.
- Strong understanding of design as a visual and creative problem-solving discipline — not decoration.
- Experience developing brand guidelines, templates, visual systems, or design standards.
- Ability to translate brand strategy and voice into practical visual principles.
- Strong creative review skills and the ability to guide designers without micromanaging.
- Understanding of how brand design adapts across digital, print, social, campaigns, presentations, events, and product collateral.
- Strong organizational instincts around templates, asset libraries, file structure, and design process.
- Ability to work cross-functionally with marketing, creative, web, scientific, product, and commercial stakeholders.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in life science, biotech, healthcare, technical B2B, or another complex industry.
- Experience working with in-house creative teams.
- Experience directing photography, video visuals, campaign imagery, or social-first creative.
- Familiarity with web/UX design systems and how they connect to broader brand identity.
- Experience using AI or emerging creative tools to support visual exploration, template development, or production efficiency.
The Right Person for This Role
You are a strong designer with a systems mind. You care about beauty, clarity, consistency, and usefulness. You see design as a visual and creative problem-solving tool that should clarify ideas, guide attention, support meaning, and improve how people engage with information. You can see when a brand feels fragmented, when a template is not working, and when designers are interpreting the brand differently. You do not just make things look good — you help build the logic that makes good design repeatable.
Why This Role Matters

Tips for Your Design Manager Job Search
Quantify design impact on your resume
Hiring managers want to see outcomes, not just deliverables. Replace task descriptions with results: how a redesign lifted conversion, reduced support tickets, or cut time-to-ship. Design manager resumes that show measurable business impact consistently move further in reviews.
Show leadership range in your portfolio
A design manager portfolio should demonstrate team direction, not just craft. Include case studies that show how you shaped process, gave feedback, or resolved conflicting stakeholder priorities. Portfolios that only showcase finished visual work undersell the management half of the role.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists design manager openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Filter openings by design function first
Design manager roles vary sharply by function: product design, brand, UX research, and design systems each require different portfolios and interview prep. Target openings by function before you filter by company size or location so your application materials stay focused and relevant.
Prepare for the portfolio presentation round
Most design manager interviews include a portfolio walkthrough where you present a project to a panel. Practice narrating your decision-making process and how you led the team, not just the final design. Interviewers are listening for how you managed ambiguity and aligned stakeholders.
Negotiate scope alongside compensation
When you receive an offer, ask about team size, design tool budget, and whether the role has final say on shipping decisions. These factors shape your day-to-day more than title alone, and clarifying them before you accept prevents surprises in your first quarter.
Design Manager Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most design managers?
The companies hiring the most design managers right now include Colliers Engineering & Design, Arcadis, and Amazon, with the largest share of openings in California, New York, and Florida, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Technology companies and large consumer brands account for a significant portion of active postings.
How many design manager jobs are remote?
About 25% of design manager openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, making it one of the more flexible management roles in creative fields. Product design and UX-focused positions tend to offer the highest share of remote options, while brand and in-house agency roles skew toward on-site or hybrid arrangements.
How do you become a design manager?
Most design managers start as individual contributors, build deep craft expertise, then take on informal leadership by mentoring junior designers or leading a workstream. From there, moving into a formal management role typically means demonstrating that you can give effective feedback, run design critiques, and align design decisions with business goals. Seeking out lead or staff-level IC roles first gives you the visibility to make that transition.
Can you get hired as a design manager with limited management experience?
Yes, especially if your portfolio shows leadership in practice. Hiring managers look for evidence that you've guided other designers, driven alignment across functions, or owned a product area end-to-end, even without a formal management title. Framing freelance team coordination, mentorship, or cross-functional project ownership as leadership experience can close the gap when you're making the IC-to-manager shift.
What does the design manager interview process look like?
Design manager interviews typically move through a recruiter screen, a hiring manager conversation focused on your leadership style and career story, a portfolio presentation to the broader team, and a final round with stakeholders or a department head. Some companies include a take-home exercise around team feedback or a design critique. The portfolio presentation round is usually the most weighted stage, so preparing a clear narrative around your process and decisions matters more than visual polish.
Where can I find and apply to design manager jobs?
You can find and apply to design manager jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from across the United States. Search the listings to find roles that match your experience and specialization, then apply directly to each one that fits.
