Tips for Your Graphic Designer Job Search
Tailor your portfolio to the role
Recruiters for graphic designer positions spend seconds on portfolios before deciding. Reorder your case studies so the work most relevant to each employer's industry appears first. A packaging-focused agency needs to see packaging work at the top, not your editorial spreads.
Show process, not just final outputs
Many graphic designer job postings explicitly ask for process documentation. Include sketches, mood boards, and revision notes alongside finished pieces. Hiring managers want to see how you think through problems, not only what the final file looks like.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists graphic designer openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Target job titles that match your specialty
The title 'graphic designer' covers very different roles. Search specifically for 'brand designer,' 'digital designer,' or 'motion designer' depending on your focus. Applying to a mismatched title means competing against candidates whose portfolios align more naturally with what the team actually needs.
Prepare a design rationale for your portfolio pieces
Interviewers routinely ask you to walk through a piece of work and explain your decisions. Practice a two-minute verbal rationale for each major portfolio project covering the brief, your concept choice, and what you would change now. Stumbling on this is one of the most common reasons strong designers don't advance.
Negotiate based on tool proficiency and output type
Graphic designer compensation often varies by software depth and deliverable type. If you're proficient in motion tools like After Effects on top of the Adobe Suite standard, or handle production-ready print files, name those explicitly when discussing offers. Employers pay more for candidates who reduce handoff friction.
Graphic Designer Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most graphic designers?
The companies hiring the most graphic designers right now include Amazon, Ralph Lauren, and Cannon Design, with the largest share of openings in California, New York, and Florida, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. In-house brand teams, agencies, and media companies consistently account for the highest volume of postings.
How many graphic designer jobs are remote?
About 26% of graphic designer openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, making it one of the more flexible creative roles in terms of location. Digital-first sub-areas such as social media design, UX/UI-adjacent work, and motion graphics tend to have the highest share of remote-eligible postings.
How do you become a graphic designer?
Most graphic designers start by building foundational skills in typography, layout, and color theory, either through a degree program in graphic design or visual communication, or through structured self-study and online coursework. From there, building a portfolio of real or spec projects is the critical step. Entry-level roles, internships, and freelance work all help turn that portfolio into professional experience that employers recognize.
Can you get hired as a graphic designer with little experience?
Yes, getting hired as a graphic designer with limited experience is possible if your portfolio is strong. Employers hiring for junior roles weigh portfolio quality over years on a resume. Spec work created for fictional brands, redesign exercises of existing companies, and volunteer design work for nonprofits all count. Being honest about your experience level and targeting roles labeled junior, associate, or entry-level improves your chances significantly.
What does the graphic designer interview process look like?
Graphic designer interviews typically involve an initial recruiter or hiring manager screen, a portfolio review where you walk through your work and explain your decisions, and often a design exercise or take-home brief. Some employers add a culture or team fit conversation. The portfolio walkthrough is usually the most important stage, so being prepared to discuss your process and the reasoning behind creative choices matters more than memorizing answers to abstract questions.
Where can I find and apply to graphic designer jobs?
You can find and apply to graphic designer jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from companies across the United States. The listings cover a range of seniority levels, specializations, and work arrangements. Find roles that match your skills and location preferences, then apply directly to each listing from the page.
