- Proficiency in modern design tools (Figma, Sketch, or similar)
- Experience designing complex, data-rich interfaces and technical workflows
- Excellent communication and storytelling skills — able to clearly present and defend design decisions as well as strong collaboration skills with the ability to work effectively in a cross-functional environment
- Familiarity with accessibility standards (WCAG 2.1 AA or higher)
- A related technical degree required
NICE TO HAVE
- Experience designing for developer or API-facing products
- Background in or exposure to design systems and component libraries

UX Product Designer Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a ux product designer in California?
There is no state-issued license for ux product designers in California, so the path centers on education and a strong portfolio. Most California employers expect a bachelor's degree in interaction design, human-computer interaction, graphic design, or a related field, though a compelling portfolio of shipped product work can substitute. Bootcamps and certificate programs from California-based institutions are also widely accepted. Building case studies that show research, wireframing, and final UI is the clearest signal hiring teams look for.
How much do UX product designers make in California?
UX product designers in California earn a median of about $100,770 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $62,860 for the lowest 10% to over $168,490 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire ux product designers in California?
Employers hiring ux product designers in California right now include Adobe, Apple, and Intuit, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's concentration of consumer tech headquarters and enterprise software companies means ux product designer demand is distributed across a broad range of product types and industries throughout the state.
Which California cities have the most ux product designer jobs?
San Francisco, San Jose, and Menlo Park have the most ux product designer openings in California. The Bay Area leads because it hosts the headquarters of the largest consumer tech and enterprise software companies in the world, while Los Angeles reflects strong demand from entertainment tech, media platforms, and a growing fintech sector, and San Diego draws openings from its biotech and defense technology industries.
Are there remote ux product designer jobs in California?
Yes, and more than most fields. About 37% of ux product designer openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting how well the core work of wireframing, prototyping, and design reviews translates to distributed teams. The most fully remote roles tend to be at mid-to-senior levels, where candidates can demonstrate independent ownership of the design process without daily in-person collaboration.
How can I get hired as a ux product designer in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is an associate or junior designer role at a mid-size California tech company, where smaller teams give early-career designers hands-on product exposure quickly. Large California employers like Adobe and Intuit run structured internship and early-career programs that feed into full-time roles. Candidates coming from adjacent positions such as graphic designer, visual designer, or UX researcher can make a strong case with a focused portfolio. A certificate in UX design combined with two or three detailed case studies showing your process is often enough to get a first interview.
