About this role
Quilt is looking for a junior visual designer to help shape our brand across platforms and audiences. This is a part-time engagement to start, with potential to grow into a full-time role as our needs expand.
Quilt is turning heat pumps into a coveted category, and our visual identity is one of the defining aspects of our young brand (example & example). You'll be contributing to content and experiences that align with our marketing and product strategies, and help us stand out in a category that's overdue for a visual overhaul.
Who you'll work with: a small and mighty design team that collaborates cross-functionally with the entire Quilt org — from marketing and sales to hardware and everything in between — to drive customer and partner-focused designs that cohesively communicate our brand message and values.
- Support design projects from concept to completion across platforms and mediums, including social, paid media, digital, print, and video
- Collaborate with marketing, partner success, UX, and product to develop and design multi-channel marketing campaigns
- Review co-branded marketing materials from partners nationwide and provide actionable feedback to align with Quilt's brand guidelines and visual standards
- Help maintain and grow our brand guidelines, ensuring consistent implementation across channels
- Contribute to brand strategy as our visual identity continues to evolve across a budding product ecosystem
You qualify if you have
- A strong portfolio showcasing visual design skills across mediums — quality of work matters more than years of experience
- Exceptional attention to detail: pixel-perfect execution, consistency, and craft are central to this role
- Strong core design skills — typography, layout, color, and composition
- Familiarity with brand guidelines and design systems
- Experience designing across marketing channels such as web, email, and social
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively with a cross-disciplinary team
- Experience or interest in video and photo editing is a plus
You'll thrive in this role if you
- Sweat the small stuff — you notice when something is 2px off and it bothers you
- Are scrappy, thrive in a fast-paced startup environment, and adapt quickly to changing priorities
- Delight in being fast and flexible in early design stages, and precise and polished at the finish line
- Are radically learning-focused, with a growth mindset and eagerness to improve your craft
- Love to experiment with new techniques, tools, and technologies
- Would like to fight climate change AND make beautiful things
This is a part-time, hybrid position — 15 to 20 hours a week, with at least one day per week in our Redwood City office. The expected hourly rate is $40 - $60, based on experience.

Visual Designer Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a visual designer in California?
Visual design has no state-issued license in California, so entry depends on education and portfolio. Most employers look for a bachelor's degree in graphic design, visual communication, or a related discipline from a California institution such as ArtCenter College of Design, California College of the Arts, or a UC or CSU campus. A strong portfolio of completed work carries more weight than credentials alone, and completing Adobe or Google UX certifications can strengthen early-career applications.
How much do visual designers make in California?
Visual designers in California earn a median of about $75,130 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $46,190 for the lowest 10% to over $129,560 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire visual designers in California?
Employers hiring visual designers in California right now include Amazon, Google, and MERCOR, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's concentration of technology headquarters, entertainment studios, and consumer brand companies means in-house design teams are common, and agencies serving those industries add significant additional volume.
Which California cities have the most visual designer jobs?
Palo Alto, Sunnyvale, and Menlo Park have the most visual designer openings in California. Los Angeles drives volume through entertainment, advertising, and consumer brands, San Francisco and the broader Bay Area reflect demand from major technology companies, and San Diego draws from biotech, defense communications, and a growing startup sector, each pulling design talent for distinct industry needs.
Are there remote visual designer jobs in California?
Yes, and more than most fields. About 50% of visual designer openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting how naturally the role translates to distributed work. Brand identity, digital illustration, and motion graphics tend to be the most remote-friendly specialties, while roles tied to physical product or in-studio production more often require on-site presence.
How can I get hired as a visual designer in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is building a focused portfolio through freelance projects, volunteer work, or coursework, then applying to junior or associate designer roles at California agencies and in-house teams. Large California employers including technology companies in the Bay Area and entertainment studios in Los Angeles regularly hire entry-level designers through new-grad programs. Adjacent roles such as production artist, design coordinator, or marketing associate are common stepping stones, and completing recognized certifications in Adobe tools or UX fundamentals can give candidates an edge in competitive markets.
Where can I find and apply to visual designer jobs in California?
You can find and apply to visual designer jobs in California on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings across the state. Find roles that fit your experience and specialty and apply directly to each one.
