What Employers Look For
The qualifications that appear most often in motor winder jobs.
- Hands-on experience rewinding AC and DC motors of varying horsepower and frame size
- Ability to read and interpret motor nameplates, wiring diagrams, and coil data sheets
- Familiarity with insulation materials, varnishes, and dipping and baking processes

- Knowledge of NEMA standards, electrical safety practices, and arc flash procedures
Tips for Your Motor Winder Job Search
Quantify your rewind and repair output
List the motor frame sizes, voltage classes, and winding types you've worked on. Recruiters scanning resumes want to see AC versus DC experience, specific horsepower ranges, and whether you've handled single-phase or three-phase coils, not just a generic 'motor repair' line.
Certify your electrical safety credentials first
Many motor winder postings require NEMA standards familiarity, arc flash awareness, or state electrician cards. Pull your certifications together before applying so you can list exact credential names and issue dates, which are frequently screened at the resume stage.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists motor winder openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Filter openings by shop equipment and tools
Pay attention to the equipment named in each job post. Shops using VPI impregnation systems, coil-forming machines, or CNC winding equipment want hands-on familiarity. Tailoring your application to mention the specific machinery they run sets you apart from general maintenance applicants.
Bring a sample repair log to your interview
Motor winder interviews often include a bench skills assessment or a walkaround of the shop floor. Arrive with a printed summary of past jobs you've diagnosed and rewound, noting failure cause, coil type, and turnaround time, so you can reference real work during the conversation.
Negotiate shift differential and overtime structure
Production motor shops and utility contractors often run two or three shifts, and overtime is common during outage season. Before accepting an offer, confirm whether overtime is mandatory, how shift differentials are calculated, and whether on-call rotations apply to your role.
Motor Winder Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
How many motor winder jobs are remote?
About 0% of motor winder openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting that most of the role requires hands-on bench work. Quality control documentation, quoting, and customer communication roles attached to winding shops are the sub-areas most likely to offer any remote flexibility.
How do you become a motor winder?
Start by completing a high school diploma or GED, then pursue a vocational program in electrical systems, electromechanical technology, or industrial maintenance. Many motor winders enter the trade through a formal apprenticeship or by starting as a shop helper and learning coil stripping, winding, and insulation techniques on the job under an experienced winder.
Can you get hired as a motor winder with little experience?
Yes, entry-level motor winder positions exist at repair shops that are willing to train candidates who demonstrate mechanical aptitude and attention to detail. Showing familiarity with basic hand tools, electrical safety awareness, and a willingness to work with insulation materials and varnishes makes you a competitive applicant even before formal winding experience. Vocational coursework strengthens your case.
What does the motor winder interview process look like?
Most motor winder interviews begin with a conversation about your hands-on experience with specific motor types, frame sizes, and winding methods. A practical skills assessment on the shop floor is common, where you may be asked to inspect a motor, identify a winding failure, or demonstrate tool use. References from previous repair shops carry significant weight with hiring managers.
Where can I find and apply to motor winder jobs?
You can find and apply to motor winder jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from employers across the United States. Search the listings to find roles that match your experience level and specialization, then apply directly to each position that fits. No detour through a third-party platform is needed.
