How to Get Visa Sponsorship in Farm Worker
Confirm your degree qualifies
Farm Worker roles on OPT require a direct connection to your degree. Agricultural science, soil science, environmental studies, and food systems programs are the clearest matches. Document how your coursework applies to the specific tasks in each job posting.
Target year-round operations
Seasonal farms may not provide enough continuous employment to satisfy OPT requirements. Prioritize employers running year-round operations, such as greenhouse facilities, large-scale produce farms, or integrated livestock operations, where consistent full-time hours are more reliably available.
Clarify employment structure upfront
Some agricultural employers hire through labor contractors rather than directly. Confirm which entity is your legal employer before accepting an offer, since your EAD must reflect authorized employment and your records need to show a verifiable employer for SEVP reporting purposes.
Update your DSO before starting
Notify your Designated School Official before beginning any Farm Worker position. Your employer name, address, and job title must be reported to SEVP within ten days of starting work. Missing this window puts your OPT authorization at risk regardless of your employment status.
Document the degree-to-role connection
If asked to justify OPT eligibility, prepare a written explanation connecting your academic training to your farm duties. Precision agriculture, pest management, irrigation systems, and crop science are strong bridges between formal education and hands-on agricultural work.
Plan around OPT end dates for STEM
Agricultural science degrees from STEM-designated programs may qualify for a 24-month OPT extension. Verify your program's CIP code with your DSO early. Employers willing to file an I-983 training plan give you significantly more time to build experience in the field.

Does a Farm Worker job qualify for OPT authorization?
It depends on your degree field. OPT requires your job to be directly related to your major. If you studied agricultural science, environmental science, sustainable agriculture, or a related discipline, a Farm Worker role can qualify. A general labor position with no connection to your coursework would not satisfy the requirement.
Can I work for a seasonal farm on OPT without violating my status?
Yes, but you need to be careful. OPT permits up to 90 days of unemployment during the standard 12-month period. If a seasonal position ends before your OPT expires and you cannot find follow-on employment, those days count against your unemployment limit. Prioritize employers with consistent, full-time hours to stay within the rules.
Where can I find Farm Worker jobs that are open to OPT students?
Migrate Mate lists Farm Worker roles from employers familiar with hiring international students on OPT. Filtering by work authorization type helps you avoid wasting time on postings that exclude F-1 workers. Browse Migrate Mate to find positions where employers have already indicated openness to OPT candidates in agricultural roles.
Do Farm Worker employers need to file any paperwork to hire me on OPT?
No USCIS petition is required for OPT employment. Your EAD card is your work authorization document, and the employer simply verifies it during I-9 onboarding. However, your DSO must update your SEVIS record with the employer's details within ten days of your start date, so prompt communication with your international student office is essential.
Can a Farm Worker job lead to H-2A or H-1B sponsorship after OPT?
H-2A is a temporary agricultural worker visa for non-specialty occupations and is not a path forward for F-1 graduates. H-1B sponsorship requires a specialty occupation tied to a bachelor's degree, which most general farm labor roles do not meet. Graduates in agricultural science or agronomy in supervisory or technical roles have a stronger case for H-1B sponsorship than production workers.
