OPT Gynecologist Jobs
Gynecologist roles on OPT require ACGME-accredited residency completion and full state medical licensure before you can practice independently. Most positions are offered through hospital systems and academic medical centers, many of which have established J-1 visa and H-1B visa sponsorship pipelines that align well with OPT and STEM OPT timelines.

Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding OPT Sponsorship in Gynecologist
Target academic medical centers first
University-affiliated hospitals and teaching institutions sponsor international physicians at higher rates than private practices. They have dedicated immigration support teams familiar with OPT authorization requirements and established pathways to H-1B visa or J-1 visa sponsorship after your OPT period ends.
Confirm your ECFMG certification is current
Employers sponsoring OPT gynecologists will verify your Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates certification before extending an offer. Ensure your ECFMG status is active and your USMLE scores are on file before applying to avoid delays in the hiring process.
Address OPT authorization proactively in your application
Include your OPT EAD card details and authorized work period in your cover letter. Hospital recruiters often screen out candidates with unclear work authorization. Being upfront reduces friction and signals you understand the sponsorship timeline they will need to plan around.
Apply before your OPT clock runs low
Hospital credentialing for physicians takes 60 to 90 days minimum. Apply for gynecologist roles at least four to six months before your OPT expires so there is enough runway for credentialing, offer negotiation, and your employer to initiate H-1B or J-1 sponsorship paperwork.
Explore J-1 waiver opportunities in underserved areas
If you completed a J-1 residency, National Interest Waiver and Conrad 30 programs allow gynecologists to waive the two-year home residency requirement by committing to practice in a Health Professional Shortage Area, which many hospital systems use as a direct sponsorship pathway.
Get your state medical license before the interview stage
Hospitals will not extend employment offers to physicians who lack state licensure in the practice location. Begin the licensing application in your target state immediately after residency match, as processing can take three to six months and directly affects your OPT start timeline.
Gynecologist OPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Can I work as a gynecologist on OPT without a medical license?
No. OPT authorizes you to work in your field of study, but state law governs medical practice independently. You must hold an active, unrestricted medical license in the state where you will practice before starting employment. OPT authorization alone does not permit you to see patients or perform procedures as a licensed physician.
Do gynecologist employers typically sponsor H-1B visas after OPT?
Yes, most hospital systems and academic medical centers that hire international physicians on OPT have established H-1B sponsorship programs. Physician roles generally qualify as specialty occupations, and many large health systems file H-1B petitions well before OPT expiration. Ask specifically about their sponsorship track record during the interview process and clarify who covers filing costs.
Does a gynecology residency qualify for STEM OPT extension?
It depends on how your degree is classified in SEVIS. Most MD degrees are not categorized under a STEM-designated CIP code, which means standard OPT of 12 months applies rather than the 24-month STEM extension. Confirm your CIP code with your DSO before counting on a STEM extension as part of your employment timeline planning.
Where can I find gynecologist jobs that sponsor OPT students?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for F-1 OPT students and filters roles by employers with a demonstrated history of sponsoring international physicians. Searching on Migrate Mate surfaces gynecologist openings at hospital systems and academic medical centers that are actively hiring OPT candidates, saving time you would otherwise spend researching each employer's sponsorship history individually.
Can I start a gynecologist fellowship on OPT after residency?
Yes, if the fellowship is in a clinical subspecialty directly related to your degree field and your OPT period is still active or you are within the 60-day grace period. Fellowship programs at ACGME-accredited institutions often have experience with OPT trainees and can initiate J-1 or H-1B sponsorship for the fellowship term. Coordinate with your DSO and the fellowship coordinator early to align authorization timelines.
