How to Get Visa Sponsorship as a Case Manager
Target employers with established sponsorship histories
Hospitals, behavioral health networks, and large nonprofit organizations sponsor Case Managers far more often than small community agencies. Search for employers who have filed H-1B petitions for social workers or case management roles in the past.
Ask about sponsorship before the offer stage
Raise visa sponsorship during the second interview or after a hiring manager signals strong interest. Framing it as a logistics question rather than a demand tends to keep conversations productive and avoids early disqualification from cautious recruiters.
Obtain relevant licensure or certifications early
A CCM credential or state-level case management certification strengthens both your candidacy and the specialty occupation argument for H-1B sponsorship. Employers are more likely to invest in sponsorship when a candidate has recognized professional qualifications.
Prioritize roles with clear OPT start timelines
Case Manager hiring cycles in healthcare and nonprofits can run six to ten weeks. Apply early in your OPT period so onboarding completes well before your work authorization expires, giving employers and immigration counsel enough lead time.
Negotiate a start date that accounts for your OPT timeline
Your OPT employment authorization card and I-20 endorsement must be valid before your first day. Confirm your exact authorization dates with your DSO before accepting an offer, and communicate any constraints clearly to your hiring manager.

Can F-1 OPT students work as Case Managers in the United States?
Yes. Case Manager roles at hospitals, nonprofits, behavioral health organizations, and government agencies regularly hire F-1 OPT students. Your degree must be in a related field such as social work, psychology, or public health, and your employer must verify your work authorization using Form I-9 before your start date.
Do Case Manager jobs qualify for the STEM OPT extension?
Most Case Manager positions do not qualify for the 24-month STEM OPT extension because social work and psychology are not on the official STEM Designated Degree Program List. However, Case Managers with degrees in public health informatics, health sciences, or certain behavioral science concentrations may qualify. Confirm your specific CIP code with your DSO before assuming eligibility.
Which types of employers are most likely to sponsor Case Managers for an H-1B visa?
Large hospital systems, managed care organizations, and national nonprofit networks are the most consistent H-1B sponsors for Case Manager roles. These employers have existing relationships with immigration counsel and understand the specialty occupation argument for the position. Smaller community agencies and county government offices rarely have the infrastructure to support H-1B petitions. Browse Case Manager jobs with sponsorship potential on Migrate Mate.
How do I document my OPT authorization when starting a Case Manager job?
Your employer will complete Form I-9 on or before your first day of work. You'll need to present your Employment Authorization Document, your valid F-1 visa, your passport, and your I-20 with a current DSO travel signature. Some employers in healthcare or child welfare settings may also require background checks before they can process your paperwork, so factor in extra lead time.
Is a Case Manager role considered a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
It can be, but it depends on the job description. Roles requiring a specific bachelor's degree in social work, psychology, or a closely related field generally meet the specialty occupation standard. Positions where any degree is accepted, or where the duties are primarily administrative, face higher scrutiny. A well-drafted job description that ties specific duties to the required degree field significantly strengthens the petition.
