Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding OPT Sponsorship as an OB/GYN Physician
Start your job search before OPT begins
Hospital credentialing alone can take 60 to 90 days after an offer. Factor in DEA registration and state medical licensure, and your 12-month OPT window fills fast. Begin applications at least six months before your program ends.
Target employers with J-1 or H-1B sponsorship history
Academic medical centers, large hospital systems, and federally qualified health centers sponsor OB/GYN physicians far more consistently than private practices. Look for employers with established immigration counsel and a track record of supporting foreign-trained physicians.
Understand how STEM OPT affects your timeline
OB/GYN is not typically classified under STEM-designated degree programs, so a 24-month STEM OPT extension is unlikely. Your path to continued authorization is H-1B visa cap or J-1 visa waiver, making early sponsorship conversations with employers critical.
Clarify H-1B specialty occupation eligibility early
Physician roles generally qualify as H-1B specialty occupations due to the degree requirements. Confirm your prospective employer is willing to file before cap season in March, since the fiscal year lottery affects your ability to work past OPT expiration.
Explore J-1 waiver programs if you want to stay long-term
If you completed residency on a J-1 visa, a Conrad 30 or federal agency waiver can remove the two-year home residency requirement. Many OB/GYN positions in underserved areas are specifically structured around J-1 waiver obligations.
Get your credentials and licenses in order before interviewing
Hospitals will verify ECFMG certification, board eligibility or certification, and active state licensure before extending an offer. Having these documents ready signals seriousness to employers and avoids delays that can push your start date past your OPT end date.
OB/GYN Physician OPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Can I work as an OB/GYN Physician on F-1 OPT?
Yes, if your OPT is authorized in a field related to your medical degree. You must have a valid EAD card before your start date, and your employment must align with your degree program. For physician roles, this typically means completing residency or fellowship training in obstetrics and gynecology before OPT begins.
Do OB/GYN Physician jobs typically offer H-1B sponsorship?
Many do, particularly at academic medical centers, large hospital networks, and multi-specialty groups with dedicated HR and immigration support. Smaller private practices are less likely to have the infrastructure to sponsor. Searching on Migrate Mate lets you filter for employers who have sponsored OPT and H-1B workers, making it easier to target the right opportunities.
How does hospital credentialing affect my OPT timeline?
Credentialing is the process hospitals use to verify your medical training, licensure, malpractice history, and certifications before granting clinical privileges. It typically takes 60 to 90 days and must be completed before you can see patients. Since this runs parallel to onboarding, your actual working start date can be 2 to 3 months after signing an offer, which significantly compresses your 12-month OPT window.
Is OB/GYN eligible for the 24-month STEM OPT extension?
Generally no. STEM OPT extensions apply to degrees in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics classified under specific CIP codes. Medical degrees, including those leading to OB/GYN practice, are not typically STEM-designated. This means your standard OPT provides 12 months of work authorization, and long-term employment requires an H-1B petition, J-1 waiver, or other immigrant pathway before OPT expires.
What should I look for in an OB/GYN job offer as an OPT student?
Beyond clinical fit, confirm that the employer is willing to sponsor H-1B before the March registration deadline and that the position qualifies as a specialty occupation. Ask whether they have experience with ECFMG-certified international medical graduates, whether they cover legal fees for the petition, and what the timeline looks like from offer to H-1B approval. Employers without prior sponsorship experience may underestimate the complexity involved.
