How to Get Visa Sponsorship in Orthotist
Clarify Your OPT Authorization Early
Be upfront with hiring managers that you hold OPT work authorization tied to your orthotic sciences or biomedical degree. Bring your EAD card and I-20 to interviews so employers understand your timeline and remaining authorized work period.
Pursue ABC Certification Before or During OPT
Board certification from the American Board for Certification in Orthotics and Prosthetics significantly strengthens your candidacy. Many employers require or strongly prefer ABC-certified practitioners, and certification makes the case for long-term sponsorship much more compelling.
Highlight Patient Care Hours and Device Specializations
Employers evaluating OPT candidates closely scrutinize clinical experience. Document your total supervised patient care hours, device categories you've fabricated, and any specialty areas like pediatric orthotics or spinal orthotics to differentiate your application.
Ask About H-1B Sponsorship During the Offer Stage
Orthotic roles typically qualify as specialty occupations under H-1B criteria given the degree requirement. Confirm the employer has sponsored H-1B workers before, and ask explicitly whether they would support your petition before your OPT authorization expires.
Use Your OPT Period to Build State Licensure
Most states require separate orthotist licensure beyond ABC certification. Obtaining your state license during OPT demonstrates long-term commitment to the U.S. market and reduces the employer's compliance burden when transitioning you to permanent work authorization.

Get Access To All JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Can I work as an orthotist on OPT?
Yes, as long as your OPT is authorized for a field directly related to orthotics, prosthetics, or a closely aligned program such as biomedical engineering or health sciences. The position must fall within your degree's field of study. Roles requiring ABC certification or candidacy are common and fully compatible with OPT status, provided your EAD is active.
Do orthotist jobs typically sponsor H-1B visas?
Orthotist roles generally qualify as H-1B specialty occupations because they require at minimum a bachelor's degree in a specific field, and increasingly a master's degree. Large hospital systems, VA facilities, and national orthotics companies are more likely to sponsor than independent clinics. Browsing open roles on Migrate Mate lets you filter specifically for employers with a sponsorship track record.
Does my orthotics degree qualify me for OPT in this field?
If your degree is in orthotics and prosthetics, biomedical engineering, kinesiology, or a related health sciences discipline, orthotist roles will generally satisfy the OPT employment requirement that work be directly related to your major. Your DSO can confirm whether a specific job offer qualifies. Avoid accepting roles where the connection to your degree field is tenuous, as this could jeopardize your status.
Is ABC certification required to work as an orthotist on OPT?
Not universally, but most clinical employers expect either active ABC certification or documented candidacy status. Some entry-level positions accept recent graduates in the certification process, giving you a window to complete requirements during your OPT period. State licensure requirements vary separately, and several states won't issue a license until ABC certification is complete, which affects where you can legally practice.
How do I find orthotist jobs that accept OPT students?
Search Migrate Mate, which is built specifically for F-1 OPT and visa-sponsored roles and filters out employers who don't support international candidates. When applying, look for postings at hospital networks, Department of Veterans Affairs facilities, and national orthotics companies, as these organizations tend to have established processes for OPT work authorization and subsequent H-1B or EB-based green card sponsorship.
