OPT Neuropsychologist Jobs
Neuropsychologist roles qualify for OPT because they require a specialized doctoral degree in neuropsychology or clinical psychology. Most positions are in hospital systems, academic medical centers, or rehabilitation clinics. STEM OPT extension does not apply to this field, so your 12-month OPT window is what you're working with.

Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding OPT Sponsorship in Neuropsychologist
Target employers with existing visa sponsorship history
Large academic medical centers and hospital networks like Mayo Clinic, Cleveland Clinic, and Johns Hopkins have established immigration infrastructure. They're far more likely to sponsor H-1B visa after OPT than private solo practices, which rarely have the resources or experience.
Secure postdoctoral fellowship positions first
Many neuropsychology postdocs at academic medical centers are funded through grants or institutional budgets that already accommodate foreign nationals on OPT. A postdoc also builds the clinical hours needed for licensure, which employers require before full sponsorship.
Apply for your EAD card as early as possible
USCIS allows OPT applications up to 90 days before your program end date. File immediately when that window opens. Neuropsychology hiring timelines are long, and you need work authorization in hand before any credentialing or privileging process begins.
Understand that licensure and OPT interact closely
Most states require a psychology license before independent practice. Licensing boards process applications slowly. Start your state licensing application during OPT so you're not waiting on both work authorization and licensure simultaneously when an offer arrives.
Clarify supervision requirements with prospective employers
Some neuropsychology roles require a licensed supervisor during your postdoctoral hours. Confirm the employer understands OPT authorization covers supervised work. Misunderstandings about work authorization scope can delay credentialing and disrupt onboarding at otherwise supportive employers.
Browse OPT-friendly neuropsychologist openings on Migrate Mate
Most general job boards don't filter for visa sponsorship willingness. Migrate Mate surfaces neuropsychologist roles from employers open to OPT candidates, saving you from applying to positions that will screen you out before your application reaches a hiring manager.
Neuropsychologist OPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a neuropsychologist role qualify for OPT work authorization?
Yes. Neuropsychologist positions qualify for OPT because they require a doctoral degree in neuropsychology or clinical psychology, directly matching the academic field of your program. Your OPT authorization covers both postdoctoral fellowship positions and staff neuropsychologist roles, provided the work is directly related to your degree field.
Can neuropsychologists qualify for the STEM OPT 24-month extension?
No. Psychology and neuropsychology programs are not on the STEM Designated Degree Program List maintained by ICE. Your OPT window is 12 months. This makes early H-1B sponsorship planning critical. Look for employers at academic medical centers who have sponsored psychologists before, and start those conversations before your OPT clock runs down.
How do I find neuropsychologist employers who are open to OPT candidates?
Most hospital and clinic job postings don't state visa sponsorship policies upfront, which makes filtering difficult on general platforms. Migrate Mate focuses on employers open to candidates on work authorization, so you can browse neuropsychologist openings without guessing. Academic medical centers and VA hospital systems are also worth targeting directly, as they have consistent sponsorship track records.
Can I work as a neuropsychologist on OPT before I'm fully licensed?
It depends on the role and the state. Many postdoctoral positions don't require full licensure because you're accumulating supervised hours toward it. However, independent practice or staff positions typically require state licensure. Confirm with the employer that the role aligns with your current licensure status before accepting an offer, and check your state's psychology licensing board requirements.
What happens to my OPT if I switch from a postdoc to a staff neuropsychologist role mid-authorization?
OPT allows you to change employers as long as each position is directly related to your degree and you report the change to your DSO within 10 days. Moving from a postdoctoral fellowship to a staff neuropsychologist role at a different institution is generally permissible. Update your SEVIS record promptly and confirm the new employer is prepared to support your H-1B petition when you approach the cap.
