Confirm your degree qualifies for STEM OPT
Lab Assistant roles typically qualify for the 24-month STEM OPT extension if your degree is in biology, chemistry, biochemistry, or a related field. Verify your CIP code with your DSO before applying to maximize your authorized work window.
Target employers with an E-Verify account
STEM OPT extensions require your employer to be enrolled in E-Verify. Before accepting an offer, confirm enrollment directly with HR. Pharma companies, university research labs, and hospital systems are common employers that already meet this requirement.
Apply to research institutions and universities first
Academic and government research labs are among the most OPT-friendly employers for Lab Assistants. They frequently hire international students, understand the authorization process, and are often already enrolled in E-Verify through existing compliance programs.
Highlight technical skills tied to your coursework
Employers want evidence that your degree directly relates to the role. Explicitly connect lab techniques like PCR, cell culture, or spectroscopy to your academic training in your resume and cover letter to strengthen the specialty occupation connection.
Disclose your OPT status early and clearly
State your work authorization status upfront in applications. Mention your remaining OPT duration and, if eligible, that you qualify for a STEM extension. This reduces ambiguity and helps hiring managers who are unfamiliar with OPT move faster.
Plan your timeline around OPT reporting deadlines
You must report a new Lab Assistant job to your DSO within 10 days of starting. Track your OPT start and end dates carefully, and begin your STEM extension application at least 90 days before your current OPT expires to avoid gaps.
Lab Assistant OPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Do Lab Assistant jobs qualify for the STEM OPT extension?
Most Lab Assistant positions qualify for the 24-month STEM OPT extension, provided your degree is in a STEM-designated field such as biology, chemistry, biochemistry, or environmental science. The role must also be directly related to your degree. Confirm your specific CIP code with your DSO, since not all science degrees are automatically STEM-designated under the official list.
What should I look for in a Lab Assistant job posting as an OPT student?
Look for postings that mention E-Verify enrollment, willingness to hire candidates on work authorization, or experience with international employees. Research institutions, pharmaceutical companies, and hospital networks are the most reliable employers for OPT students. Migrate Mate filters Lab Assistant jobs by OPT-friendly employers, so you can focus your search on roles where your authorization is not a barrier.
Can I work as a Lab Assistant at a university on OPT?
Yes. University research labs and core facilities are among the most accessible employers for F-1 OPT students. They are typically enrolled in E-Verify, are familiar with OPT authorization, and frequently hire students from their own graduate programs. Roles in academic settings often also align well with STEM OPT extension requirements, especially if your position supports active research.
Does a Lab Assistant role count as a job related to my degree for OPT purposes?
It does if the work directly applies knowledge from your degree program. For example, a chemistry graduate performing synthesis, titration, or analytical testing in a lab setting clearly meets the standard. The connection between your coursework and your day-to-day duties should be documented and explainable, since your DSO may ask you to describe how the job relates to your field of study.
How many hours can I work as a Lab Assistant on OPT?
During the post-completion OPT period, you must work at least 20 hours per week to remain in valid status. Full-time positions of 40 hours per week are permitted and common for Lab Assistant roles. Part-time positions qualify as long as you consistently meet the 20-hour minimum. Working zero hours for more than 90 cumulative days during your OPT period can jeopardize your status.
