How to Get Visa Sponsorship as a Learning Experience Designer
Lead with your instructional design tool stack
Employers hiring Learning Experience Designers prioritize Articulate 360, Adobe Captivate, and LMS administration skills. Listing these prominently on your resume signals immediate productivity and reduces hesitation around visa-related onboarding timelines.
Frame your degree as a specialty occupation match
OPT requires your work to be directly related to your degree. Clearly connect your instructional design, educational psychology, or learning science coursework to the job description in both your resume and cover letter.
Check whether your degree qualifies for the STEM extension
Degrees in educational technology, human-computer interaction, or cognitive science often qualify for the 24-month STEM OPT extension. Confirm your CIP code with your DSO early, since this extension nearly triples your authorized work window.
Ask about H-1B sponsorship before accepting an offer
Raise sponsorship directly during the offer stage, not after signing. Ask whether the company has sponsored H-1B visas before and whether they work with immigration counsel. This saves time and avoids accepting a role with no long-term path.
Build a portfolio that demonstrates measurable learning outcomes
Employers sponsoring visas want low-risk hires. A portfolio showing completed eLearning modules, learner engagement data, or documented performance improvements makes you a demonstrably lower risk than a candidate with no visible work samples.

Get Access To All JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Do Learning Experience Designer jobs qualify for OPT work authorization?
Yes, Learning Experience Designer roles typically qualify for OPT as long as your work is directly related to your degree field. Degrees in instructional design, educational technology, curriculum development, or learning science satisfy this requirement. If your degree falls under an eligible STEM CIP code, you may also qualify for the 24-month STEM OPT extension, giving you up to three years of authorized work.
Where can I find Learning Experience Designer jobs that sponsor OPT students?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for F-1 OPT students and filters jobs by visa sponsorship willingness, so you're not wasting applications on employers who won't hire international students. Browse Learning Experience Designer listings on Migrate Mate to find roles at companies already familiar with OPT authorization and H-1B sponsorship processes.
Can I work as a freelance Learning Experience Designer on OPT?
Self-employment is technically permitted on OPT but comes with strict conditions. You must be actively running a legitimate business, and the work must relate directly to your degree. Most immigration advisors recommend against freelancing as your primary OPT activity because USCIS scrutinizes self-employment closely. Full-time employment with a single sponsoring employer is a cleaner, lower-risk path.
Does my instructional design degree qualify for the STEM OPT extension?
It depends on your specific CIP code. Degrees classified under educational technology, human-computer interaction, or cognitive science often qualify. Degrees in general education or curriculum studies typically do not. Ask your Designated School Official to confirm your program's CIP code against the official STEM OPT eligible programs list before you plan around the extension.
What happens to my OPT if my Learning Experience Designer role ends?
You have a 60-day grace period from your last day of employment to find new qualifying work, transfer to a new visa status, or depart the United States. During this window your OPT authorization remains valid but you cannot work. Report the job change to your DSO immediately and begin your search right away, since 60 days moves faster than most people expect.
