Target employers familiar with OPT
Community mental health centers, hospital systems, and large behavioral health networks are more likely to have hired OPT workers before. Smaller private practices often lack HR infrastructure to navigate work authorization, so prioritize organizations with dedicated hiring teams.
Address licensure and OPT together upfront
State MFT licensure requirements vary significantly. Before accepting a role, confirm the employer will count your supervised hours toward licensure while you're on OPT. Some employers only hire pre-licensed candidates under direct supervision, which aligns well with OPT timelines.
Know your OPT authorization window
Standard OPT lasts 12 months. Marriage and Family Therapy is not a STEM field, so a 24-month extension is not available. Plan your job search and transition to H-1B visa or another visa category well before your OPT expiration date.
Ask about H-1B sponsorship early
MFT roles typically qualify as specialty occupations under H-1B, since they require a master's degree in a specific field. Ask employers during the interview process whether they've sponsored H-1B visas before and whether they plan to support your transition after OPT.
Consider academic and hospital settings
Universities and nonprofit hospitals can be cap-exempt H-1B employers, meaning they can file H-1B petitions year-round without entering the lottery. These settings also frequently hire therapists and offer structured supervision, making them strong targets for OPT students.
Get your supervised hours documented carefully
Most states require 2,000 to 4,000 supervised clinical hours for MFT licensure. Keep detailed records of your hours from day one. Proper documentation protects you if you change employers or need to demonstrate qualifying experience during a future visa application.
Marriage And Family Therapist OPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Can I work as a Marriage and Family Therapist on OPT before I'm fully licensed?
Yes, in most states you can work as an associate or pre-licensed therapist under supervision while completing your licensure hours. Your OPT work authorization covers pre-licensed clinical roles as long as the position is directly related to your degree field. Confirm with your DSO that the job title and duties align with your authorized field of study before starting.
Does my Marriage and Family Therapy degree qualify for a STEM OPT extension?
No. Marriage and Family Therapy programs are classified under the social sciences and behavioral health fields, which are not included on the DHS STEM designated degree program list. This means you're limited to the standard 12-month OPT period. Planning your path to H-1B or another long-term visa before OPT expires is essential.
Do MFT roles qualify for H-1B sponsorship after OPT?
Marriage and Family Therapist positions typically qualify as H-1B specialty occupations because they require a master's degree in a specific clinical field. Employers who have sponsored H-1B workers before are your strongest targets. Cap-exempt employers like universities and nonprofit hospitals can file outside the annual lottery, giving you more flexibility on timing.
Where can I find Marriage and Family Therapist jobs that are open to OPT students?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for F-1 OPT students and filters for employers open to sponsoring international workers. Searching there saves time compared to applying broadly and discovering sponsorship limitations late in the process. Look for roles at community health centers, hospital systems, and academic medical centers, which tend to have more experience hiring OPT candidates.
What happens to my supervised clinical hours if I change employers during OPT?
Your accumulated supervision hours belong to you and should transfer when you move to a new employer, as long as they were documented properly and supervised by a qualified licensed professional. However, some states require continuity of supervision or specific supervisor credentials. Always get written documentation of your hours from your supervisor before leaving any position.
