OPT Home Health Nurse Jobs
Home Health Nurse jobs on OPT are available, but most positions require RN licensure in the state where you'll practice, which takes time to secure. STEM OPT extension is not available for this role. Plan your 12-month OPT window carefully around licensing timelines and employer H-1B visa sponsorship willingness.

Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding OPT Sponsorship as a Home Health Nurse
Prioritize employers with H-1B sponsorship history
Home health agencies and hospital-affiliated home care programs vary widely on sponsorship. Focus on larger regional or national agencies that have sponsored nurses before. Smaller independent agencies rarely have the legal infrastructure to support H-1B visa petitions.
Secure your RN license before OPT starts
State RN licensure through NCLEX is a hard requirement for virtually every Home Health Nurse role. Delays in licensure eat into your OPT window. Apply for your NCLEX authorization and state license as early as your program allows.
Target states with faster NCLEX endorsement timelines
If you're licensed in one state and want to work in another, endorsement timelines range from two weeks to several months. Compact State Nursing License states streamline multi-state practice and give you more employer options during your OPT period.
Understand the VisaScreen certificate requirement
Foreign-educated nurses working in the U.S. need a VisaScreen certificate from CGFNS International. Processing takes three to six months. Start this application well before graduation so it doesn't delay your ability to accept a job offer.
Ask about H-1B sponsorship directly during interviews
Home health employers often hire OPT nurses without thinking about long-term visa sponsorship. Raise it directly before accepting any offer. Confirm that the employer has sponsored H-1B petitions for nurses in the past, not just other roles.
Document all clinical hours carefully for future visa petitions
When applying for H-1B or EB-3 visas later, detailed records of your clinical experience matter. Keep logs of patient caseloads, specialized care areas, and supervisory sign-offs. Gaps in documentation can slow employment-based petition approvals.
Home Health Nurse OPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Can I work as a Home Health Nurse on F-1 OPT?
Yes, provided you hold a valid RN license in the state where you'll practice and have an active EAD card. Home Health Nurse work falls within nursing and healthcare fields, which are eligible for OPT. However, this role does not qualify for the STEM OPT 24-month extension, so your authorization is limited to 12 months.
Does Home Health Nurse qualify for STEM OPT extension?
No. Nursing is classified under CIP code 51.38, which is not on the STEM Designated Degree Program List. That means Home Health Nurses on F-1 OPT have a 12-month work authorization window only. If you want to remain in the U.S. long-term, you'll need an employer willing to sponsor an H-1B or pursue an employment-based green card path like EB-3.
Which visa can a Home Health Nurse transition to after OPT?
The most common path is the H-1B visa, which requires employer sponsorship and is subject to an annual lottery. Registered nursing is generally accepted as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes. An alternative is the EB-3 employment-based green card, which many hospital systems and home health agencies have used to sponsor foreign nurses. TN visa is available for Canadian and Mexican RNs under USMCA.
How do I find Home Health Nurse employers that sponsor OPT workers?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for F-1 OPT students and filters jobs by sponsorship history and visa compatibility. Searching there gives you a shortlist of employers that have sponsored nurses before, rather than applying broadly and discovering sponsorship limitations only after an interview. Focus on larger home health networks and hospital-affiliated programs, which are more likely to have established immigration processes.
Do I need a VisaScreen certificate to work as a Home Health Nurse on OPT?
If you completed your nursing education outside the United States, yes. Federal law requires foreign-educated nurses to obtain a VisaScreen certificate through CGFNS International before being issued most employment-based visas. During OPT itself, you can work on your EAD without it, but you'll need VisaScreen in place before any subsequent visa petition is approved. Processing takes three to six months, so start early.
