Tutor Jobs for OPT Students
Tutor jobs on OPT are widely available at universities, tutoring centers, and online platforms, but authorization rules matter. Your EAD must be active before you start, and the role must align with your degree field for STEM OPT extensions. Independent contractor arrangements require extra caution.

How to Get Visa Sponsorship in Tutor
Confirm your role qualifies under your degree field
For STEM OPT, tutoring must directly relate to your degree. A computer science graduate tutoring math or coding satisfies this. Tutoring unrelated subjects may not qualify, which puts your 24-month extension at risk.
Clarify your employment classification upfront
Many tutoring positions are offered as independent contractor roles. STEM OPT requires a formal employer-employee relationship, so confirm with your DSO whether the arrangement satisfies reporting requirements before accepting any offer.
Track your hours if working multiple tutoring jobs
OPT allows multiple concurrent employers, but STEM OPT requires working at least 20 hours per week in total. Keep records across all positions to stay compliant and document this accurately during employer reporting cycles.
Ask employers about E-Verify enrollment early
STEM OPT employers must be enrolled in E-Verify. Many smaller tutoring companies and independent schools are not. Confirm enrollment before accepting an offer to avoid losing your extension eligibility after onboarding.
Prepare a clear narrative connecting tutoring to your field
Employers unfamiliar with OPT often hesitate at sponsorship. A one-page explanation of your EAD, work authorization timeline, and how the tutoring role connects to your degree field helps hiring managers move forward confidently.
Report job changes to your DSO within the required window
If you switch tutoring employers or add a new one, update your DSO promptly. STEM OPT requires reporting within five business days of any job change to avoid a compliance violation that could affect your status.

Get Access To All JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Can I work as a tutor on OPT if my degree is not in education?
Yes, for standard OPT there is no requirement that your job title match your degree field exactly. However, for STEM OPT the role must be directly related to your degree. A data science graduate tutoring statistics or programming would generally qualify. A biology graduate tutoring unrelated subjects likely would not. Confirm with your DSO before accepting.
Do tutoring jobs on OPT count toward STEM OPT extension eligibility?
They can, but only if the tutoring work is directly related to your STEM degree and performed for an E-Verify enrolled employer in a genuine employer-employee relationship. Freelance or platform-based tutoring arrangements often fail one of these requirements. Check with your DSO to confirm your specific setup qualifies before relying on it for your extension application.
Where can I find tutoring jobs that are open to OPT candidates?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for F-1 OPT students and lists tutoring roles from employers familiar with OPT work authorization. Most general job boards do not filter by sponsorship or OPT friendliness, which wastes time and creates rejection cycles. Searching on Migrate Mate surfaces roles where employers already understand your authorization status.
Can I tutor students privately as a self-employed individual while on OPT?
Self-employment is not permitted under OPT. You must have a formal employer-employee relationship, meaning a company or institution employs you, withholds taxes, and reports your employment. Private tutoring where you set your own rates and invoice clients independently does not meet this requirement and puts your OPT authorization at risk.
What documentation should I bring when starting a tutoring job on OPT?
You will need your EAD card, your Form I-20 with OPT authorization noted, your passport, and your I-94 record. Employers complete Form I-9 using these documents. For STEM OPT, your employer also needs to be enrolled in E-Verify before your start date. Bring original documents, not copies, and confirm your EAD start date has passed before your first day.
