Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding OPT Sponsorship in UX Product Design
Target product-led companies, not agencies
In-house product teams at tech companies sponsor visas far more consistently than design agencies. Agencies rely on project-based work, which makes long-term sponsorship commitments harder. Look for companies with dedicated UX research and product design functions built into their core operations.
Lead with outcomes, not deliverables
Sponsors want designers who move metrics, not just ship screens. Frame portfolio case studies around measurable impact: conversion lifts, drop-off reductions, or user satisfaction scores. Quantified results signal business value, which is exactly what visa-sponsoring employers need to justify the investment.
Confirm your degree qualifies for STEM OPT extension
Human-Computer Interaction and Interaction Design programs often qualify for the 24-month STEM OPT extension, but not all design degrees do. Verify your CIP code with your DSO before applying to roles, so you can honestly communicate your full authorization timeline to potential employers.
Disclose OPT status early, but frame it strategically
Mention your OPT authorization upfront rather than waiting until an offer. Emphasize your current work authorization and, if applicable, your STEM extension eligibility. Employers who sponsor H-1B visas are far less likely to hesitate when the near-term path is clearly laid out for them.
Specialize in a high-demand vertical to stand out
Generic UX generalists face more competition for sponsored roles. Specializing in fintech, healthtech, or enterprise SaaS design makes you a stronger candidate where product complexity justifies headcount. Niche expertise shortens hiring timelines and makes the sponsorship case easier for hiring managers to approve.

UX Product Design OPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Do UX Product Design jobs qualify for the STEM OPT extension?
It depends on your specific degree, not your job title. Programs in Human-Computer Interaction, Interaction Design, or Information Systems often carry a STEM-designated CIP code that qualifies. A general Fine Arts or Graphic Design degree typically does not. Confirm your degree's CIP code with your Designated School Official before making promises to employers about your STEM extension eligibility.
How do I find UX Product Design employers who sponsor visas?
Migrate Mate is the most efficient way to find UX Product Design roles from employers with a track record of sponsoring international workers. Rather than cold-applying to companies with unknown sponsorship policies, filtering through a visa-focused platform surfaces employers who have actively filed for H-1B or other work visas, saving you significant time and reducing rejection risk.
Does UX Product Design count as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
Generally yes, when the role requires a degree in a specific design or HCI-related field. USCIS evaluates whether a bachelor's degree in a specific discipline is the normal minimum requirement for the position. Roles titled UX Designer or Product Designer that require HCI, Interaction Design, or a closely related degree have been successfully petitioned as H-1B specialty occupations, though employer documentation of requirements matters significantly.
Can I work as a UX Product Design freelancer or contractor during OPT?
Yes, OPT permits self-employment and contract work as long as the work is directly related to your degree field and you work at least 20 hours per week. You would need to document your freelance or contract activity for your OPT record. However, for students pursuing H-1B sponsorship after OPT, traditional full-time employment with a sponsoring employer is a far more straightforward path.
What should I do if my OPT expires before securing H-1B sponsorship?
If you're in the 60-day grace period after OPT ends without an H-1B approval, you have limited options: change to another nonimmigrant status, begin a new degree program, or depart the U.S. If your H-1B petition was filed before your OPT expired and you received a receipt notice, you may be eligible for a cap-gap extension that bridges your status. Consult your DSO and an immigration attorney immediately when your timeline gets tight.
