Ever since we started in 2007, Sunrun has been at the forefront of connecting people to the cleanest energy on Earth. It’s why we’ve become the #1 home solar and battery company in America. Today, we’re on a mission to change the way the world interacts with energy, and we’re building a company and brand that puts power at the center of life. And we’re doing it by designing a dynamic culture where employee development, well-being, and safety come first. We’re unlike any other solar company. Our vertically integrated model gives us total control over every part of the energy lifecycle – from sale through installation and beyond – so you can find endless opportunities for growth. Come join a career you can grow in and a culture you can run with.
At Sunrun, we are on a mission to create a planet run by the sun. We are seeking a Visual / UI Designer—a creative unicorn who moves fluently between the worlds of high-impact marketing design and systematic, product-level UI work. This is not two jobs stitched together; it is one role for the designer who has always done both and never wanted to choose.
You thrive at the intersection of brand storytelling, conversion-focused performance design, and scalable design systems. You obsess over the details—the weight of a typeface, the hierarchy of a landing page, the micro-interaction in a checkout flow—because you understand that every touchpoint shapes a customer's trust in clean energy. From inbox to final checkout, from paid social to mobile UI, you make the Sunrun experience cohesive, beautiful, and impossible to ignore.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Visual Design & Brand Identity
- Multi-Channel Design: Produce a wide range of digital assets—social media graphics (static and motion), display banners, email templates, web landing pages, and in-product UI screens—that feel unmistakably Sunrun.
- Brand Guardianship: Serve as a steward of the Sunrun visual identity, ensuring all output aligns with brand guidelines while actively pushing the creative standard higher.
- Visual Storytelling: Translate complex solar technology and financial concepts into elegant, digestible infographics, visual narratives, and UI content patterns that reduce friction and build confidence.
- High-Fidelity Craft: Deliver pixel-perfect mockups, prototypes, and production-ready assets across desktop, tablet, and mobile breakpoints.
UI Design & Design Systems
- Interface Design: Design intuitive, aesthetically refined interfaces for web and mobile products—crafting layouts, color schemes, typography hierarchies, icon sets, and interactive elements that put users first.
- Design System Ownership: Help develop, maintain, and evolve Sunrun's design system, style guides, and UI pattern libraries, ensuring consistency and enabling design-to-development velocity.
- Developer Partnership: Collaborate closely with front-end engineers, speaking the language of HTML/CSS constraints to bridge the gap between design intent and technical implementation.
Performance & Conversion Optimization
- Direct Response Design: Partner with the Performance Marketing team to design high-impact ad creative that drives measurable action across Meta, Google, Salesforce Marketing Cloud, and emerging platforms.
- A/B Testing Support: Develop multiple creative iterations to identify visual and UX drivers that improve click-through, conversion, and retention rates.
- Conversion-Optimized UX: Ensure every customer-facing touchpoint—from first ad impression to final checkout—is cohesive, accessible, and conversion-optimized.
Collaboration & Innovation
- Cross-Functional Leadership: Collaborate with Copywriters, UX Designers, Product Managers, Marketing Leads, and Engineers to take projects from initial brief through final pixel-perfect delivery.
- Design Advocacy: Present and defend design decisions clearly, incorporating stakeholder feedback with professionalism and a point of view.
- AI-Assisted Workflows: Leverage AI design tools (e.g., Adobe Firefly, Midjourney, generative fills) to accelerate image creation, automate repetitive tasks, and explore new creative concepts.
- Trend Leadership: Stay ahead of digital design trends, UI/UX best practices, accessibility standards, and technology shifts to keep Sunrun feeling fresh and best-in-class.
REQUIREMENTS
- Experience: 2+ years of professional design experience in a digital design role, with a portfolio demonstrating both marketing design excellence and systematic UI/product work. In-house or agency experience welcomed.
- Portfolio: A strong portfolio showcasing mastery of layout, typography, color theory, and user-centered design—with clear examples of both brand/marketing campaigns and UI/product design.
- Software Mastery: Expert proficiency in Figma and Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, After Effects). Experience with Salesforce Marketing Cloud is a strong plus.
- Design Systems: Demonstrated experience building and maintaining design systems, component libraries, and style guides in Figma or equivalent tools.
- Motion Graphics: Intermediate to advanced skills in motion design, including animated social content, GIFs, and short-form video editing.
- Front-End Fluency: Familiarity with HTML/CSS constraints—you don't need to write code, but you can speak the language fluently with developers.
- Performance Design: Proven track record designing direct-response assets for paid social and digital advertising, with an understanding of what drives click-through and conversion.
- AI Fluency: Comfort using AI tools to enhance the creative process, accelerate production, and explore generative concepts.
- Project Management: Ability to manage multiple concurrent projects under tight deadlines, prioritizing by business impact.
- Communication: Excellent presentation and collaboration skills; comfortable defending design decisions and incorporating feedback from diverse stakeholders.
- Education: Bachelor's degree in Graphic Design, Interaction Design, or a related field preferred.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
- Operational Tech Proficiency: Ability to perform standard office duties, including prolonged periods of sitting or standing at a desk and working on a computer.
- Visual & Mental Focus: Must possess high visual acuity and the ability to focus for extended periods on detailed design work, color correction, and pixel-level refinement.
- Communication: Ability to present creative concepts and take constructive feedback from stakeholders in a professional, collaborative manner.

Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding OPT Sponsorship as a Visual Designer
Lead with your portfolio, not your resume
Visual Designer hiring decisions hinge on your work. Publish a clean, curated portfolio site before applying. Employers review it before your resume, so weak or missing portfolio work will disqualify you faster than visa status ever will.
Target companies with established design systems
Mid-size and enterprise companies with product teams, brand guidelines, and dedicated design operations are far more likely to sponsor OPT. Startups without a design function often lack the HR infrastructure to process work authorization paperwork efficiently.
Address OPT proactively but briefly
When asked about work authorization, say you're authorized to work on OPT and eligible for H-1B visa sponsorship. Avoid lengthy explanations. Framing it as a routine administrative step rather than a burden keeps the conversation focused on your qualifications.
Align your portfolio to the employer's visual language
Before interviews, study the company's design output and reference it specifically. Showing awareness of their brand voice, color systems, or UI patterns signals cultural fit and reduces perceived risk for employers unfamiliar with sponsoring international candidates.
Highlight tools that match the job description
Figma, Adobe Creative Suite, and Sketch proficiency are frequently required. Ensure your resume and portfolio explicitly name the tools you've used on real projects. Generic mentions of design software carry less weight than demonstrated, project-specific usage.
Network inside design communities, not just job boards
Design team leads and creative directors often hire through referrals. Participating in critique sessions, design meetups, or online communities puts you in front of hiring managers before a role is posted, reducing competition and increasing your OPT sponsorship odds.
Visual Designer OPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Can I work as a Visual Designer on F-1 OPT?
Yes, if your degree is in graphic design, visual communication, interaction design, or a related field, Visual Designer roles qualify for F-1 OPT. Your position must be directly related to your major. Full-time, part-time, contract, and freelance work all count toward your OPT period, provided each engagement is documented and reported through your DSO.
Does a Visual Designer role qualify for STEM OPT extension?
It depends on your specific program. Students who graduated from a CIP-coded STEM program, such as Human-Computer Interaction or certain Computer Science concentrations with a design track, may qualify for the 24-month STEM OPT extension. Pure graphic design or fine arts programs typically do not carry a qualifying STEM CIP code, so confirm your program's classification with your international student office before assuming eligibility.
How do I find Visual Designer jobs that sponsor OPT?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for F-1 OPT students and surfaces Visual Designer roles from employers experienced with work authorization. Browsing Migrate Mate lets you filter for positions where sponsorship is realistic, saving you time you'd otherwise spend applying to companies that routinely decline OPT candidates. Starting your search there is the most efficient path for international students in design.
What should I say about my OPT status during a Visual Designer interview?
State clearly that you're authorized to work in the U.S. on OPT and that you'll be eligible for H-1B sponsorship in the future. Keep the explanation brief and factual. Most design hiring managers are not immigration experts, so framing OPT as a standard temporary authorization, rather than a complex legal matter, tends to land better and avoids unnecessary anxiety on the employer's side.
Can I do freelance or contract Visual Design work on OPT?
Yes, freelance and contract work is allowed on OPT, but each client engagement counts as a separate employer and must be reported to your DSO. You cannot work more than 20 hours per week in pre-completion OPT. During post-completion OPT, full-time freelancing is permitted. All work must remain within your field of study to satisfy USCIS requirements for authorized OPT employment.
