INTRODUCTION
The Veterinary Population Medicine (VPM) department specializes in population and individual animal medicine focusing on large animal and food animals’ health and production, biomedical science, and ecosystem and public health. Our faculty members conduct animal and public-health-focused research to better diagnose, treat, and prevent animal disease, as well as diseases that can be transmitted between animals and people. Faculty provide clinical instruction in medicine, diseases, surgery, production medicine, public health, and reproduction of domestic large-animal species and are home to faculty in clinics, epidemiology, preventive medicine, veterinary public health, pathology, and one health/ecosystem health. Faculty members provide clinical services for animals, diagnostic services to animal owners, and continuing education and extension programs for veterinarians and animal owners.
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES
- Serve as a locum for Ruminant teaching of DVM rotations.
- Rotations: Dairy On-Farm Clinical (DOFC), Bovine Therio & Lameness Overview (BTLO), and Bovine Therio & Lameness Advanced (BTLA).
Clinical Teaching at the Dairy Education Center
- Supervise and instruct students during clinical activities, including cow screening, physical exams, treatments, palpation and pregnancy diagnosis, surgical procedures, and necropsies.
- Ensure student and animal safety.
- Adhere to treatment protocols and record-keeping requirements established by Trident Dairy and the Vet-of-Record.
- Lead daily case rounds discussions.
- Communicate with Trident Dairy management regarding daily cow care decisions.
- Communicate/coordinate with other faculty and rotation coordinators as pertains to the daily schedule and activities.
- Provide real-time feedback to students and contribute to rotation student evaluation.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
- DVM, VMD, or equivalent foreign degree.
- Practical clinical and field experience for at least 1 year in bovine veterinary medicine, either in private practice or in an academic ambulatory practice, is required.
- The candidate must have excellent communication and presentation skills.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Board certification by the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners.
ANTICIPATED HOURS/WEEK
- Depends on the week; Will work approx 39 - 45 days.
APPOINTMENT DURATION
- 6 - 7 months (ending December 31, 2026).
TEACHING
The Veterinary Population Medicine Department provides clinical and didactic instruction in medicine, surgery, production medicine, diagnostics, and reproduction of domestic large-animal species and is home to faculty in epidemiology, veterinary public health, and pathology. The department provides residency training in large animal medicine, surgery, pathology, and veterinary public health and preventive veterinary medicine and works with students in the Veterinary Sciences and Comparative and Molecular Biosciences graduate programs.
RESEARCH
Faculty members conduct animal and public-health-focused research to better diagnose, treat, eliminate, and prevent animal disease, as well as diseases that can be transmitted between animals and humans.
SERVICE
Faculty members provide clinical services for animals in the Leatherdale Equine Center, the Large Animal Hospital, and the West Metro Clinic, as well as diagnostic services to animal owners through the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory. They consult with producers and veterinarians in the community, provide continuing education and extension programs for veterinarians and animal owners, and play an active role in the Center for Animal Health and Food Safety, John Fetrow Dairy Education Center, Equine Center, and the Swine Disease Eradication Center.
