Pharmaceutical Sales Specialist Jobs in South Dakota: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a pharmaceutical sales specialist in South Dakota?
Most pharmaceutical sales specialist roles in South Dakota require a bachelor's degree, with life sciences and business backgrounds being the most competitive. South Dakota does not require a state-issued pharmaceutical sales license, but many employers expect candidates to complete manufacturer-led product training and pass internal credentialing before carrying a territory. Building familiarity with the healthcare networks anchored by Sanford Health and Avera Health gives candidates a strong advantage in the state's market.
How much do pharmaceutical sales specialists make in South Dakota?
Pharmaceutical sales specialists in South Dakota earn a median of about $61,770 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $37,790 for the lowest 10% to over $99,490 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire pharmaceutical sales specialists in South Dakota?
Employers hiring pharmaceutical sales specialists in South Dakota right now include Furniture Mart USA, Alternative HR, and South Dakota Board of Regents, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. South Dakota's dominant integrated health systems and regional medical distributors are among the most active sources of ongoing territory-based openings across the state.
Which South Dakota cities have the most pharmaceutical sales specialist jobs?
Sioux Falls, Vermillion, and Brookings are the South Dakota cities with the most pharmaceutical sales specialist openings. Sioux Falls drives the largest share of listings because it is home to Sanford Health and Avera Health headquarters, while Rapid City and Aberdeen generate demand as regional medical hubs serving large rural catchment areas that require dedicated territory coverage.
Are there remote pharmaceutical sales specialist jobs in South Dakota?
Yes, but they're rare. Pharmaceutical sales is fundamentally a field-based role requiring in-person visits to clinics, hospitals, and prescribers, which limits remote options significantly. About 17% of pharmaceutical sales specialist openings tied to South Dakota are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, and those positions typically cover account management or medical science liaison functions rather than traditional territory sales.
How can I get hired as a pharmaceutical sales specialist in South Dakota with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is moving laterally from a healthcare-adjacent sales role, such as medical device, laboratory services, or clinical staffing sales, which South Dakota's large health systems recognize as directly transferable. Sanford Health and Avera Health both recruit internally from their clinical operations teams for entry-level representative roles. Completing a nationally recognized pharmaceutical sales training program and obtaining a CNPR certification strengthens a resume for candidates without direct field experience.
Where can I find and apply to pharmaceutical sales specialist jobs in South Dakota?
You can find and apply to pharmaceutical sales specialist jobs in South Dakota on Migrate Mate, which lists current South Dakota openings as they are posted. Search the available roles, identify the ones that match your background and preferred territory, and apply directly to the positions that fit your experience.
