Plumber Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a plumber in California?
To work as a licensed plumber in California, you must obtain a C-36 Plumbing Contractor license through the Contractors State License Board, which requires passing a trade exam and a law and business exam. Most plumbers begin through a state-approved apprenticeship, typically through the United Association or a local joint apprenticeship training committee. Journeyman-level experience is required before sitting for the contractor exam, and all applicants must pass a background check.
How much do plumbers make in California?
Plumbers in California earn a median of about $72,830 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $47,350 for the lowest 10% to over $131,100 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire plumbers in California?
Employers hiring plumbers in California right now include University of La Verne, Ace Hardware, and Generac Power Systems, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's scale of commercial construction and ongoing infrastructure investment means large mechanical contractors, regional plumbing service companies, and public utilities maintain consistent hiring throughout the year.
Which California cities have the most plumber jobs?
La Verne, Fort Irwin, and Los Angeles have the most plumber openings in California right now. Los Angeles and the broader Southern California region drive volume through large-scale commercial construction and a dense concentration of residential service contractors, while San Jose and the Bay Area generate demand from technology campus builds, data center infrastructure, and high-rise development.
Are there remote plumber jobs in California?
Yes, but they are rare. Plumbing is a hands-on trade that requires physical presence at job sites, so remote work is not a realistic option for most positions. About 0% of plumber openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and those roles are typically estimating, project coordination, or service dispatch positions rather than field plumbing work.
How can I get hired as a plumber in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying to a registered apprenticeship program through a California Joint Apprenticeship Training Committee, which hires people with no prior experience and pays wages while you learn on the job. Large California mechanical contractors and regional plumbing companies regularly take on apprentice applicants, and some utility districts run entry-level helper or service assistant roles that transition into full apprenticeships. Registering with the California Department of Industrial Relations Division of Apprenticeship Standards and completing a basic trade math or blueprint reading course gives your application a clear edge.
Where can I find and apply to plumber jobs in California?
You can find and apply to plumber jobs in California on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from employers actively hiring across the state. Find the roles that fit your experience level and location, then apply directly to each one.
