Equipment Mechanic Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a equipment mechanic in California?
The most direct path is completing a diesel technology or heavy equipment mechanics program at a California community college, such as those offered at Fresno City College or San Bernardino Valley College, followed by an apprenticeship or entry-level shop role. California does not require a state license specifically for equipment mechanics, but employers expect formal training or documented field experience. Earning an ASE certification in medium and heavy trucks or construction equipment strengthens any application considerably.
How much do equipment mechanics make in California?
Equipment mechanics in California earn a median of about $78,550 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $47,880 for the lowest 10% to over $129,310 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire equipment mechanics in California?
Employers hiring equipment mechanics in California right now include Western Digital Technologies, Apple, and Bloom Energy, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's mix of large construction contractors, agricultural operations, and public-sector fleets means openings appear across both private companies and government agencies throughout the state.
Which California cities have the most equipment mechanic jobs?
Fremont, San Jose, and Alameda consistently show the most equipment mechanic openings in California. Los Angeles drives volume through large construction projects, port operations, and municipal fleet maintenance, while the Central Valley cities of Fresno and Bakersfield reflect the region's agriculture and oil-field equipment needs, and the Inland Empire supports major distribution and infrastructure contractors.
Are there remote equipment mechanic jobs in California?
Yes, but they are rare. The core work of an equipment mechanic is hands-on and site-specific, so most positions require physical presence. About 0% of equipment mechanic openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and those that do allow any remote component are typically limited to roles involving parts ordering, warranty documentation, or technical support coordination rather than direct repair work.
How can I get hired as a equipment mechanic in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry point is an apprenticeship through a California community college partnered with a local contractor or equipment dealer, where paid on-the-job training runs alongside coursework. Large California employers and public agencies, including Caltrans and county transportation departments, periodically hire equipment service helpers or lube technicians as stepping-stone roles. Candidates with a forklift certification, a CDL permit, or documented experience maintaining agricultural or recreational equipment hold a clear advantage over those with no mechanical background at all.
Where can I find and apply to equipment mechanic jobs in California?
You can find and apply to equipment mechanic jobs in California on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings across the state. Find roles that fit your experience and location, then apply directly to the employers posting them.
