Equipment Mechanic Jobs in Texas: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a equipment mechanic in Texas?
Texas does not require a state-issued license specifically for equipment mechanics, so most employers focus on education and hands-on experience. The typical path starts with a vocational or technical program in diesel technology or heavy equipment mechanics at a Texas community college such as San Jacinto College, Texas State Technical College, or Lone Star College. Completing an apprenticeship or entry-level technician role at a construction, oil field, or fleet operation then builds the practical credentials employers want.
How much do equipment mechanics make in Texas?
Equipment mechanics in Texas earn a median of about $61,940 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $45,710 for the lowest 10% to over $89,140 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire equipment mechanics in Texas?
Employers hiring equipment mechanics in Texas right now include Kiewit, Fluor, and ExxonMobil, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Texas's deep concentration of oil and gas operations, large construction contractors, and regional municipal fleets means demand for qualified mechanics stays consistent across both major metros and rural service areas.
Which Texas cities have the most equipment mechanic jobs?
Houston, Austin, and Abilene have the most equipment mechanic openings in Texas. Houston leads because of its massive energy sector and port infrastructure, Dallas-Fort Worth follows due to its large construction activity and logistics hubs, and San Antonio draws steady demand from its military installations, utilities, and growing commercial construction market.
Are there remote equipment mechanic jobs in Texas?
Yes, but they're rare. Equipment mechanics work directly with heavy machinery, which requires physical presence at job sites, shops, or fleet yards. About 4% of equipment mechanic openings tied to Texas are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and those positions tend to involve roles with a supervisory, estimating, or technical support component rather than hands-on repair work.
How can I get hired as a equipment mechanic in Texas with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is enrolling in a diesel or heavy equipment mechanics program at Texas State Technical College or a similar Texas community college and targeting helper or lube technician roles at regional construction firms, agricultural equipment dealers, or municipal fleet departments while still in training. Large Texas employers like waste management companies and county road departments often hire entry-level mechanics' assistants and provide on-the-job training, and completing even a short certification in diesel technology gives your application a clear edge over unverified experience.
Where can I find and apply to equipment mechanic jobs in Texas?
You can find and apply to equipment mechanic jobs in Texas on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from employers actively hiring across the state. Search the listings for roles that match your experience level and preferred location, then apply directly to the ones that fit.
