Principal Instrumentation & Controls Engineer — Aragonite Operations

In this principal role, you will design, commission, and operate site control systems and process control networks—bringing modern DCS/PLC practices to life across ABB 800xA, Allen-Bradley/Rockwell, WonderWare, and Canary Historian.

Your mission

Core outcomes

• Safety leadership—embed safe work practices and compliance in everything you do.
• Operational readiness—align the Controls Systems team to meet Aragonite production needs.
• Reliability—proactively prevent incidents; implement logic changes under the Clean Harbors MOC process.
• Optimization—develop, test, and implement control algorithms; advance Basic Process Control and Process Optimization.
• Visibility—define goals, KPIs, and dashboards to monitor control health and performance.
• Continuous improvement—renew and evolve DCS platforms; resolve performance issues with disciplined problem-solving.
• Data & historians—maintain ABB and Wonderware historians; plan future Claroty integration and utilize Canary Historian.
• Resilience—maintain DCS/PLC hardware/software; enforce backup strategies for critical systems.
• Cyber & networks—improve the PCN and configure/install TCP/IP networks using ISA, NIST, and CISA frameworks.
• Documentation—own network diagrams, P&IDs, and control system drawings.
• Field execution—direct contractors; manage work orders, parts procurement, and critical spares.
• Connectivity—stand up communications with remote PLCs and DCS nodes.
• Availability—participate in scheduled on-call rotations; follow safe, compliant procedures.

Capabilities we value

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical, Chemical, or Automation/Instrumentation Engineering preferred.
• 5+ years in control systems with strength in maintenance and design.
• Expertise in P&IDs and PLC ladder logic trees.
• End-to-end DCS/PLC programming experience—from concept to startup.
• ABB DCS and Allen-Bradley/Rockwell PLCs; FactoryTalk, ControlLogix 5000, ABB 800xA Control Builder.
• SCADA and VMware; administering workstations/servers/switches/networks.
• Analog loop tuning and troubleshooting.
• Microsoft Office proficiency; independent, self-directed work style.
• Industrial electrical fluency: electrical installation, conduit pulling/bending, schematic reading, and broader electrical/electronic systems.
• Experience with Wonderware, Rockwell, and Allen-Bradley ecosystems.
