How do you become a principal software engineer in Maine?
Reaching the principal level in Maine typically requires a bachelor's degree in computer science or a closely related field followed by a decade of progressive software engineering experience. Maine does not require a state-issued license to practice software engineering, so advancement is credential-driven rather than board-regulated. Employers in Portland and Augusta consistently promote candidates who have led major system redesigns, mentored teams, and delivered measurable architectural improvements.
How much do principal software engineers make in Maine?
Principal software engineers in Maine earn a median of about $123,120 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $82,930 for the lowest 10% to over $179,990 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire principal software engineers in Maine?
Employers hiring principal software engineers in Maine right now include ritepros, IDEXX Laboratories, and Tyler Technologies, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Which Maine cities have the most principal software engineer jobs?
Portland, Westbrook, and Maine have the most principal software engineer openings in Maine. Portland drives the largest share of demand as Maine's primary commercial and technology hub, home to WEX Inc. and a growing cluster of fintech and SaaS companies, while Augusta and Bangor add volume through state government IT contracts and healthcare system employers such as MaineHealth and Northern Light Health.

Yes, and more than most fields. About 33% of principal software engineer openings tied to Maine are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, reflecting how thoroughly this role is built around code review, architecture documentation, and async collaboration. The portions of the job most likely to remain on-site are executive stakeholder meetings and security-sensitive defense or government contracts.
How can I get hired as a principal software engineer in Maine with little or no experience?
