Product Safety Engineer Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a product safety engineer in California?
Most product safety engineers in California enter the field with a bachelor's degree in electrical, mechanical, or systems engineering, then build specialization through hands-on compliance or test engineering roles. California employers in medical devices and aerospace place high value on certified functional safety professional credentials from organizations such as TÜV or the Functional Safety Institute. Earning a Certified Safety Professional designation and gaining laboratory accreditation experience strengthens candidacy significantly in California's heavily regulated industries.
How much do product safety engineers make in California?
Product safety engineers in California earn a median of about $131,540 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $83,210 for the lowest 10% to over $175,940 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire product safety engineers in California?
Employers hiring product safety engineers in California right now include OpenAI, Google, and Suno, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's concentration of medical device, semiconductor, and defense contractors means demand is spread across both large corporations and specialized mid-size firms operating under strict regulatory frameworks.
Which California cities have the most product safety engineer jobs?
San Francisco, Mountain View, and Sunnyvale lead California for product safety engineer openings. San Jose and the broader Bay Area drive volume through the consumer electronics and semiconductor industries, while San Diego's concentration of medical device and biotech companies anchors that market, and Los Angeles draws demand from aerospace, defense, and automotive suppliers headquartered or operating throughout the region.
Are there remote product safety engineer jobs in California?
Yes, but they're rare. Product safety engineering typically requires hands-on access to prototypes, test equipment, and laboratory facilities, which limits fully remote arrangements. About 22% of product safety engineer openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and those positions tend to concentrate in the regulatory documentation, standards interpretation, and compliance program management aspects of the role rather than bench or lab work.
How can I get hired as a product safety engineer in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is a compliance technician or test engineer role at a California-based product certification laboratory or a consumer electronics or medical device manufacturer. Companies such as large Bay Area hardware firms and San Diego medical device makers regularly hire associate compliance engineers and new graduates to support certification testing and documentation. Building familiarity with UL and IEC standards through coursework or self-study, and pursuing an entry-level Certified Safety Professional credential, gives candidates a concrete edge over other applicants without field experience.
Where can I find and apply to product safety engineer jobs in California?
You can find and apply to product safety engineer jobs in California on Migrate Mate, which lists current California openings across industries including consumer electronics, medical devices, aerospace, and automotive. Find roles that fit your experience and specialization and apply directly to each employer through the listings.
