- Bachelor's degree in computer science, electrical engineering, or a related technical field
Tips for Your Test Engineer Job Search
Tailor your resume to test types
Hiring managers scan for specific testing domains: functional, regression, performance, or embedded. List the exact test types you've owned, not just tools. A resume that names 'automated regression testing for mobile APIs' outperforms one that says 'test automation experience.'
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists test engineer openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Quantify defects caught, not hours tested
Employers want evidence of impact. Replace vague statements with outcome metrics: defect escape rate reduced, test cycle time cut, or coverage percentage increased. Numbers tied to quality outcomes signal engineering rigor, not just task completion.
Match your tools list to the job stack
Read each posting for the exact tools listed, then mirror that language in your resume. Selenium and Playwright are not interchangeable to a hiring manager even if you know both. Showing stack alignment reduces screening friction significantly.
Prepare a debugging walkthrough for interviews
Most test engineer technical screens include a live bug hunt or root-cause exercise. Practice narrating your reasoning as you isolate failures, reproduce them, and document reproduction steps. Interviewers evaluate your process as much as your final answer.
Negotiate scope and tooling in your offer
Beyond compensation, ask about the test infrastructure: manual-to-automation ratio, CI/CD pipeline maturity, and whether the team owns tooling decisions. These factors affect day-to-day work quality and your ability to grow skills in the role.
Test Engineer Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most test engineers?
The companies hiring the most test engineers right now include Apple, Joby Aviation, and NVIDIA, with the largest share of openings in California, Texas, and Massachusetts, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Demand is highest at companies with large software portfolios or hardware product lines that require continuous quality validation.
How many test engineer jobs are remote?
About 10% of test engineer openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, with on-site requirements more common in hardware, embedded systems, and automotive roles where physical device access is necessary. Software and web application testing roles tend to have the highest remote availability.
How do you become a test engineer?
Start by building a foundation in a scripting language like Python and learning a test automation framework such as Selenium or Playwright. Work through personal or open-source projects to build a portfolio of test suites you can show employers. Entry-level QA analyst roles are a common starting point, and many engineers move into test engineering after demonstrating automation skills on the job.
How do you get hired as a test engineer with little experience?
Build a GitHub repository with automated test projects targeting a public API or open-source application. Employers hiring junior test engineers look for evidence you can write reproducible test cases and structure a test suite, not just run manual checks. Contributing to open-source QA tooling or completing a course on a framework like Cypress can substitute for direct work history in early applications.
What does the test engineer interview process look like?
Most test engineer interviews run three to four stages: an initial recruiter screen, a technical phone screen covering testing concepts and basic coding, a take-home or live coding exercise where you write test cases for a provided scenario, and a final panel with the engineering team. Some companies add a system design round focused on how you'd architect a test framework for a given product.
Where can I find and apply to test engineer jobs?
You can find and apply to test engineer jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from across the United States. Find roles that match your experience and specialization, then apply directly to each listing from the page.
