- Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.
ESSENTIAL MENTAL AND PHYSICAL FUNCTIONS:
This role requires technical focus, attention to detail, and the ability to work in both office and manufacturing environments. The Mechanical Engineer must be able to analyze data, develop solutions, and communicate effectively with cross-functional teams.
- Frequent sitting, standing, and walking throughout the workday.
- Occasional lifting of materials up to 25 lbs.
- Use of fine motor skills for computer work, drawing, and prototyping.
- Ability to remain focused and organized in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Mechanical Engineers at AAON operate in a hybrid office and manufacturing environment, requiring regular interaction with cross-functional teams and occasional visits to production areas.
- Perform all tasks on-site.
- Work in a climate-controlled office with periodic exposure to factory conditions.
- Exposure to noise, dust, and temperature fluctuations during plant visits.
- Regular collaboration with engineering, production, and quality teams.
- Use of personal protective equipment (PPE) as required when in manufacturing areas.
- This role is classified as a Safety Sensitive Position, requiring heightened awareness and adherence to all safety protocols to ensure a secure work environment.

What Employers Look For
The qualifications that appear most often in mechanical design engineer jobs.
- Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or a closely related engineering discipline
- Proficiency in 3D CAD software such as SolidWorks, CATIA, Creo, or NX
- Experience creating detailed engineering drawings with GD&T per ASME Y14.5
- Familiarity with manufacturing processes including machining, injection molding, or sheet metal fabrication
- Experience with PDM or PLM systems for drawing and revision control
- Knowledge of FEA tools or structural analysis methods for design validation
Tips for Your Mechanical Design Engineer Job Search
Tailor your resume to each CAD platform
Recruiters filter for specific tools like SolidWorks, CATIA, or Creo before reading anything else. List each platform you've used, the version if relevant, and name the deliverables you produced, such as detailed drawings, assemblies, or PDM-managed part libraries.
Show GD&T fluency in concrete terms
Geometric dimensioning and tolerancing proficiency is expected but rarely proven on a resume. Call out specific callouts you've applied, such as true position on bolt patterns or profile tolerances on mating surfaces, so hiring managers see working knowledge rather than a buzzword.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists mechanical design engineer openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Target postings that match your industry depth
A mechanical design engineer background in medical devices carries different regulatory weight than one in consumer products. Filter openings by industry vertical and prioritize roles where your specific domain, whether FDA-regulated hardware or high-volume injection-molded parts, is named in the requirements.
Prepare a design review walkthrough for interviews
Most mechanical design engineer interviews include a portfolio review or whiteboard exercise. Practice explaining one project from concept sketch through first article inspection, covering the trade-offs you made on materials, tolerances, or manufacturing method and why you made them.
Negotiate using total compensation, not just base
Offers for mechanical design engineers often include patent bonuses, tool certification reimbursements, and professional society dues. Before accepting, ask for the full breakdown so you're comparing equivalent packages across competing offers.
Mechanical Design Engineer Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most mechanical design engineers?
The companies hiring the most mechanical design engineers right now include Apple, Amazon, and Fluor, with the largest share of openings in California, Texas, and Michigan, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Demand is concentrated in aerospace, defense, and medical device manufacturers, though industrial equipment and automotive suppliers also post consistently.
How many mechanical design engineer jobs are remote?
About 13% of mechanical design engineer openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, which is lower than in software roles because hands-on lab work and hardware iteration often require on-site access. Sub-specializations focused on systems documentation, CAD modeling review, or design standards development tend to offer the most remote flexibility.
How do you become a mechanical design engineer?
Most mechanical design engineers start with a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, then build proficiency in at least one major CAD platform during coursework or internships. From there, entry-level roles focused on detail drafting or component design build the hands-on experience needed to progress into lead design positions. Professional development through certifications in specific software or manufacturing disciplines accelerates advancement.
Can you get hired as a mechanical design engineer without much experience?
Yes, employers hire junior mechanical design engineers who can demonstrate practical CAD skills and a working understanding of manufacturing constraints, even without extensive professional history. A strong capstone project, personal build projects with documented drawings, or a co-op placement in a related engineering role can substitute for years of experience when your portfolio clearly shows you can produce release-quality drawings.
What does the mechanical design engineer interview process look like?
The process typically starts with a recruiter screen focused on CAD platforms and industry background, followed by a technical interview where you walk through past projects and explain design decisions. Many employers include a take-home or whiteboard exercise asking you to sketch a concept, identify failure modes, or call out tolerances on a sample drawing. Final rounds often involve meeting the team lead and discussing cross-functional workflows with manufacturing or quality engineers.
Where can I find and apply to mechanical design engineer jobs?
You can find and apply to mechanical design engineer jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from across the United States. Find the roles that fit your background, whether you're focused on aerospace assemblies, consumer hardware, or industrial equipment design, and apply directly to each listing from the page.
