Our client, a defense technology hardware company is seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer for a 6-month Contract-to-Hire opportunity.

Location: San Francisco, CA (Remote-Hybrid / Onsite as Needed)
Employment Type: 6+ Month Contract-to-Hire (C2H) or Direct Hire
Work Arrangement: Local candidates preferred
W2 Pay Rate: $30.00–$40.00/hour (Contract)
Direct Hire Salary: $50,000–$80,000 annually

POSITION OVERVIEW

We are seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer to join a growing team in a hands-on engineering and product development environment. The ideal candidate will have strong mechanical design experience using SolidWorks (SWX) and be comfortable taking designs from concept through detailed development and production. This role will involve significant design-from-scratch work, as well as redesign and modification of existing components. The successful candidate will work closely with management and may collaborate with contract manufacturers, vendors, and potentially customers. The ability to work effectively in a small, dynamic startup environment and adapt to changing responsibilities is important.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

- Create detailed mechanical designs and assemblies using SolidWorks (SWX).
- Develop new designs from scratch based on management direction and project requirements.
- Modify and redesign existing components and assemblies as needed.
- Apply knowledge of GD&T, engineering specifications, ANSI standards, and related design practices.
- Review and evaluate 2D and 3D mechanical designs and drawings.
- Inspect prototype machined parts and components produced by contract manufacturers to verify form, fit, and functionality.
- Document inspection and product information within the company's SolidWorks PDM system.
- Maintain accurate engineering and design documentation.
- Assist with sourcing and evaluating off-the-shelf (OTS) components and products.
- Collaborate with management, contract manufacturers, vendors, and other internal and external stakeholders.
- Support projects in a fast-paced environment where priorities and responsibilities may shift as business needs evolve.
- Communicate effectively with individuals with a variety of backgrounds and experience levels.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field; BSME preferred/required.
- 2–5+ years of professional mechanical design experience preferred.
- Strong hands-on experience with SolidWorks (SWX) CAD.
- Experience with SolidWorks PDM.
- Demonstrated mechanical design experience, including designing components and assemblies from scratch.
- Understanding of GD&T, engineering specifications, and applicable ANSI standards.
- Ability to interpret and work with 2D and/or 3D drawings and models.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work independently while also contributing effectively as a team member.
- Ability to work in a small, entrepreneurial environment and take on responsibilities as needed.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

- Electro-mechanical design experience.
- Mechatronics experience.
- Tooling design experience.
- Experience working with MIL-SPEC requirements or standards.
- Experience in drones, aerospace, aircraft, defense, DOD, government, or military environments.
- Experience working with contract manufacturers and external vendors.
- Familiarity with inspection and validation of machined prototype parts.
- Experience with off-the-shelf product sourcing and integration.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Candidates with experience using other major CAD platforms, such as Creo, Siemens NX, or CATIA, may also be considered if they have strong mechanical design experience and can demonstrate the ability to transition to SolidWorks. A portfolio or work samples demonstrating mechanical design experience is highly preferred and may be requested during the interview process.
