Construction Project Engineer Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a construction project engineer in California?
A bachelor's degree in civil, structural, or construction engineering from an ABET-accredited program is the standard starting point. From there, passing the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying Fundamentals of Engineering exam earns you Engineer-in-Training status in California, which is a recognized stepping stone toward full licensure through the California Board for Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors, and Geologists. Many California employers hire engineers immediately after graduation while they accumulate the experience hours required for the Professional Engineer exam.
How much do construction project engineers make in California?
Construction project engineers in California earn a median of about $122,500 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $77,980 for the lowest 10% to over $175,940 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire construction project engineers in California?
Employers hiring construction project engineers in California right now include BKF Engineers, Colliers Engineering & Design, and Helix Electric, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's volume of public infrastructure contracts, transit expansions, and large-scale mixed-use developments means both national engineering firms and regional general contractors maintain steady hiring pipelines in the state.
Which California cities have the most construction project engineer jobs?
Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Irvine have the most construction project engineer openings in California. Los Angeles and the broader Southern California region drive demand through large-scale transportation, stadium, and commercial development projects, while the San Francisco Bay Area and San Diego draw openings tied to tech campus construction, transit infrastructure, and military and port facility work.
Are there remote construction project engineer jobs in California?
Yes, but they're rare. About 19% of construction project engineer openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, which reflects how site-dependent the role is by nature. The portions of the role most suited to remote work include document control, RFI and submittal review, scheduling updates, and coordination calls, while field observation, inspections, and owner meetings almost always require an on-site presence.
How can I get hired as a construction project engineer in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying for field engineer or assistant project engineer roles, which large California contractors such as Webcor Builders, Hensel Phelps, and Clark Construction regularly post for new graduates. Cal Poly's cooperative education program and UC Davis's senior capstone partnerships with industry are well-known pipelines into these firms. Earning your Engineer-in-Training credential before applying and building a portfolio of coursework drawings or any internship submittals gives candidates a measurable edge over others at the same experience level.
Where can I find and apply to construction project engineer jobs in California?
You can find and apply to construction project engineer jobs in California on Migrate Mate, which lists current California openings across construction, infrastructure, and engineering firms. Find roles that fit your experience and location and apply directly to the employers posting them.
