Robotics Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a robotics engineer in California?
Robotics roles in California typically require a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, computer science, or a closely related field, and California does not issue a state-specific robotics license. Many employers accept candidates with associate degrees or vocational certificates in automation technology combined with demonstrated hands-on experience. Building a portfolio of projects using ROS, embedded systems, or industrial robot platforms, and earning vendor certifications from manufacturers like FANUC or ABB, strengthens a candidacy significantly in the California market.
How much do roboticses make in California?
Roboticses in California earn a median of about $81,550 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $56,020 for the lowest 10% to over $129,380 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire robotics engineers in California?
Employers hiring robotics engineers in California right now include Amazon, Agility Robotics, and FieldAI, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's concentration of aerospace, medical device, and autonomous vehicle companies means demand is spread across both large primes and well-funded technology startups.
Which California cities have the most robotics jobs?
San Francisco, Santa Clara, and Fremont are the California cities with the most robotics openings. The Bay Area leads because of its density of autonomous systems and semiconductor companies, Los Angeles is driven by aerospace and defense primes, and San Diego's concentration of biotech and defense contractors supports a consistent volume of robotics and automation roles outside the two largest metros.
Are there remote robotics jobs in California?
Yes, but they're rare. About 17% of robotics openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting that most roles require hands-on access to physical hardware, lab equipment, or production lines. The work most likely to be performed remotely is simulation, software development, and controls architecture where physical robot access is not required day to day.
How can I get hired as a robotics engineer in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is a university co-op, internship, or new-graduate rotational program at a large California employer such as a Bay Area autonomous vehicle company, an aerospace prime in Los Angeles, or a medical robotics firm in San Diego. Candidates who build a GitHub portfolio demonstrating ROS projects, embedded control work, or simulation environments stand out. Lateral entry from adjacent roles like CNC machinist, mechatronics technician, or test engineer is common, and a capstone project or FANUC or Universal Robots operator certification gives a credential employers recognize.
Where can I find and apply to robotics jobs in California?
You can find and apply to robotics jobs in California on Migrate Mate, which lists current California openings from employers actively hiring. Search for roles that match your experience level and specialty, then apply directly to the ones that fit.
