Construction Project Engineer Jobs in Texas: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a construction project engineer in Texas?
Most construction project engineer roles in Texas require a bachelor's degree in civil, mechanical, or construction engineering from an accredited university. Earning your Engineer-in-Training certification by passing the Fundamentals of Engineering exam through the Texas Board of Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors strengthens your candidacy significantly and is often expected for advancement. Many Texas employers also value internship experience with a Texas-based contractor before full-time hire.
How much do construction project engineers make in Texas?
Construction project engineers in Texas earn a median of about $96,860 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $63,240 for the lowest 10% to over $164,330 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire construction project engineers in Texas?
Employers hiring construction project engineers in Texas right now include Kiewit, PCL Construction, and Ryan Companies US, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Texas's mix of industrial, infrastructure, and commercial construction activity means hiring is spread across general contractors, engineering and construction firms, and large owner-operators in the energy sector.
Which Texas cities have the most construction project engineer jobs?
Dallas, Houston, and Austin have the most construction project engineer openings in Texas. Houston leads due to its concentration of petrochemical plant expansions and port infrastructure, Dallas-Fort Worth draws volume from commercial real estate and highway projects, and San Antonio sees steady demand tied to military installation upgrades and regional public works programs.
Are there remote construction project engineer jobs in Texas?
Yes, but they're rare. Construction project engineers are typically tied to job sites for inspections, coordination meetings, and contractor oversight, making full remote work uncommon for this role. About 8% of construction project engineer openings tied to Texas are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and those positions tend to involve preconstruction planning, estimating, or document control functions rather than active field management.
How can I get hired as a construction project engineer in Texas with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying to field engineer or project engineer intern roles directly with large Texas general contractors and owner-operators such as Zachry Group, Turner Construction, or Austin Industries, which run structured new-graduate programs. Lateral entry from roles like construction management, estimating, or site superintendent assistant is common. Completing your Fundamentals of Engineering exam and earning an OSHA 30-Hour Construction certification gives candidates a clear edge in competitive Texas markets.
Where can I find and apply to construction project engineer jobs in Texas?
You can find and apply to construction project engineer jobs in Texas on Migrate Mate, which lists current Texas openings across Houston, Dallas-Fort Worth, San Antonio, and other markets. Find roles that fit your experience and specialization and apply directly to the employers posting them.
