Mechanical Engineer Jobs in Texas: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a mechanical engineer in Texas?
You become a mechanical engineer in Texas by earning a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from an ABET-accredited program, then pursuing licensure through the Texas Board of Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors if your role involves public practice or senior-level design sign-off. Licensure requires passing the Fundamentals of Engineering exam, gaining qualifying experience, and then passing the Principles and Practice of Engineering exam. Many private-sector roles hire without a PE license, particularly at the entry level.
How much do mechanical engineers make in Texas?
Mechanical engineers in Texas earn a median of about $112,410 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $75,810 for the lowest 10% to over $175,210 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire mechanical engineers in Texas?
Employers hiring mechanical engineers in Texas right now include Apple, Amazon, and Fluor, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Texas's energy, aerospace, and advanced manufacturing base means hiring is distributed across a wide range of industries, giving mechanical engineers strong options whether they prefer upstream oil and gas operations, defense systems, or industrial production environments.
Which Texas cities have the most mechanical engineer jobs?
Austin, Houston, and Dallas have the most mechanical engineer openings in Texas. Houston leads because of its concentration of energy companies and petrochemical facilities along the Gulf Coast, while Dallas-Fort Worth draws engineers into aerospace, defense, and semiconductor manufacturing, and San Antonio supports a growing defense and advanced manufacturing base anchored by military installations and established industrial employers.
Are there remote mechanical engineer jobs in Texas?
Yes, but they're rare. Mechanical engineering work is often tied to physical systems, lab environments, manufacturing floors, or field sites, which limits full remote availability. About 10% of mechanical engineer openings tied to Texas are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and those tend to concentrate in design review, simulation, and project management functions rather than hands-on or site-based roles.
How can I get hired as a mechanical engineer in Texas with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying directly to co-op and new-graduate programs at large Texas industrial employers, including those in Houston's energy corridor and the defense contractors operating in the Dallas-Fort Worth and San Antonio areas. Internship experience with any Texas-based manufacturer, refinery, or aerospace firm is a strong differentiator. Pursuing EIT certification through the Texas Board of Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors immediately after graduation signals readiness and distinguishes candidates competing for the same entry-level openings.
Where can I find and apply to mechanical engineer jobs in Texas?
You can find and apply to mechanical engineer jobs in Texas on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from employers actively hiring across the state. Find roles that match your experience and specialization and apply directly.
