Position Summary
FEMC is seeking a hands-on Mechanical Design Engineer to design, develop, improve, and troubleshoot custom automation and packaging equipment.
This position is ideal for an engineer who enjoys machine design and wants involvement throughout the entire lifecycle of a project. The successful candidate will work directly with our engineering, manufacturing, assembly, controls, and service teams to develop practical solutions to real-world manufacturing challenges.
This is not a desk-only engineering position. Our engineers have the opportunity to see their designs manufactured and assembled, participate in machine testing and troubleshooting, and make improvements based on what they learn on the shop floor and through real-world machine performance.
Responsibilities
- Design machine components, assemblies, mechanisms, and automated equipment using SolidWorks
- Develop production-ready 3D models and detailed manufacturing drawings
- Create and maintain bills of materials and engineering documentation
- Take machine designs and engineering changes from concept through manufacturing, assembly, and testing
- Modify and improve existing equipment based on customer applications and field experience
- Solve mechanical problems involving motion, product handling, pneumatics, drives, conveyors, sensors, and machine components
- Work directly with machinists and assemblers to resolve manufacturing and assembly issues
- Design with manufacturability, assembly, maintenance, reliability, and cost in mind
- Support machine assembly, testing, and Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT)
- Troubleshoot mechanical issues during machine build and startup
- Collaborate with controls, manufacturing, sales, and service personnel to improve machine performance
- Assist with product standardization and continuous improvement initiatives
- Occasional travel to customer facilities to support equipment installation, startup, or troubleshooting
Qualifications
Required:
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering Technology, Aerospace Engineering, or a related field
- 2+ years of mechanical design experience preferred
- Strong SolidWorks experience
- Strong mechanical aptitude and problem-solving skills
- Ability to work effectively in both office and manufacturing environments
- Strong communication and organizational skills
Preferred:
- Experience designing industrial machinery, custom automation equipment, or manufacturing systems
- Knowledge of manufacturing processes including machining, fabrication, and assembly
- Experience designing machined components
- Familiarity with motors, gearboxes, bearings, shafts, pneumatics, conveyors, servo systems, sensors, and automated equipment
- Experience supporting machine builds, testing, or commissioning
- Experience with packaging, food processing, material handling, robotics, or industrial automation
- Hands-on experience with fabrication, machining, robotics, Formula SAE, Baja, or similar technical projects
