Structural Project Engineer Jobs in Texas: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a structural project engineer in Texas?
You become a structural project engineer in Texas by earning a bachelor's degree in civil or structural engineering from an ABET-accredited program, then registering as an Engineer-in-Training through the Texas Board of Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors after passing the FE exam. After gaining qualifying experience under a licensed PE, you sit for the PE exam to obtain full licensure. Most Texas firms expect project engineers to be actively pursuing or already holding a Texas PE license.
How much do structural project engineers make in Texas?
Structural project engineers in Texas earn a median of about $96,860 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $63,240 for the lowest 10% to over $164,330 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire structural project engineers in Texas?
Employers hiring structural project engineers in Texas right now include Garver, Westwood Professional Services, and Freese and Nichols, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Texas's combination of active TxDOT infrastructure programs, ongoing Gulf Coast energy facility construction, and a booming commercial real estate market keeps demand steady across both large national engineering firms and regional structural consultancies.
Which Texas cities have the most structural project engineer jobs?
Houston, Austin, and Dallas have the most structural project engineer openings in Texas. Houston leads because of its concentration of petrochemical, industrial, and port infrastructure projects, while Dallas-Fort Worth draws demand from large-scale commercial development and highway expansion, and Austin's rapid growth in tech campuses and mixed-use construction keeps a strong pipeline of openings there as well.
Are there remote structural project engineer jobs in Texas?
Yes, but they're relatively limited. About 20% of structural project engineer openings tied to Texas are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting the hands-on coordination this role typically requires during design reviews, site visits, and construction administration phases. The tasks most likely to be performed remotely are modeling, calculations, and report writing, while construction-phase work almost always requires on-site presence.
How can I get hired as a structural project engineer in Texas with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying to new-graduate engineer or EIT positions at large Texas-based engineering firms such as Jacobs, Freese and Nichols, or Halff Associates, which run structured onboarding programs for candidates without project experience. Adjacent roles like structural design technician or CAD drafter at a structural consultancy also open the door. Passing the FE exam before applying and building a portfolio of academic or personal structural projects gives early-career candidates a clear edge in the Texas market.
Where can I find and apply to structural project engineer jobs in Texas?
You can find and apply to structural project engineer jobs in Texas on Migrate Mate, which lists current Texas openings. Find a role that fits your experience and location, then apply directly to the employer through the listing.
