Tips for Your Structural Project Engineer Job Search
Tailor your resume to project delivery
Hiring managers for structural project engineer roles want to see projects taken from design through construction documents. List specific structural systems you've engineered, software you used, and the scale of each project, not just your job duties.
Highlight your PE licensure status clearly
State whether you're licensed, EIT-certified, or pursuing licensure, and in which states. Many postings screen on this before reviewing anything else, so put it near the top of your resume rather than burying it in a credentials section.
Target firms by structural specialty
A firm focused on high-rise concrete work hires differently than one specializing in timber or prefabricated steel. Filter openings by the structural system you know best and apply where your materials experience matches the firm's portfolio.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists structural project engineer openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Prepare for technical design exercises
Many structural engineering interviews include a take-home or whiteboard problem involving load calculations or connection design. Review AISC and ACI code provisions relevant to your specialty so you can work through problems without referencing notes.
Negotiate using project responsibility scope
When discussing compensation, frame your value around the project delivery stages you own independently. Engineers who manage subconsultants, coordinate with architects, or lead plan review responses command higher offers than those who describe only analysis tasks.
Structural Project Engineer Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most structural project engineers?
The companies hiring the most structural project engineers right now include BKF Engineers, Westwood Professional Services, and Garver, with the largest share of openings in California, Texas, and Florida, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Demand is concentrated in firms handling large-scale commercial, infrastructure, and institutional projects.
How many structural project engineer jobs are remote?
About 22% of structural project engineer openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting the hands-on coordination this role requires. Sub-disciplines with the highest remote share tend to be peer review, code consulting, and forensic engineering, where site presence is less continuous than on active design-build projects.
How do you become a structural project engineer?
Start by earning a bachelor's degree in civil or structural engineering from an ABET-accredited program, then pass the Fundamentals of Engineering exam to become an EIT. Gain experience under a licensed PE working on structural design and documentation, then pass the PE exam and, if you want a structural specialty, the Structural Engineering exam offered in many states.
Can you get hired as a structural project engineer with little experience?
Yes, many firms hire at the entry level specifically to develop engineers through project work. Strengthen your candidacy by completing relevant coursework in structural analysis and design, building proficiency in industry software like ETABS or SAP2000, and showcasing senior capstone or internship projects that demonstrate you can apply code provisions to real structural systems.
What does the structural project engineer interview process look like?
The process typically starts with a phone screen covering your background and software experience, followed by a technical interview where you may be asked to walk through a past project or solve a design problem involving load paths or connection details. Final rounds often include a meeting with project managers or principals to assess how you'd handle client communication and construction-phase questions.
Where can I find and apply to structural project engineer jobs?
You can find and apply to structural project engineer jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from employers across the United States. Search the listings to find roles that match your specialty and experience level, then apply directly to each one that fits.
