Design more than products. Design how they’re built.
At KUNZ, Mechanical Design Engineers help develop both the modular systems behind hyperscale data centers and the processes used to assemble and deploy them.
You’ll work across product design, production planning, manufacturing, and construction to solve engineering challenges that do not stop at the drawing. Your work will directly influence how physical infrastructure is laid out, assembled, installed, and improved in the field.
If you want to see your engineering work translate directly into how complex infrastructure gets built, this is the role.
The Opportunity
As a Mechanical Design Engineer focused on Production Design, you’ll develop parametric facility layouts, analyze production capacity, simulate assembly sequences, and create repeatable production processes for modular data center programs.
You’ll work alongside senior engineers and collaborate with product teams, trade partners, vendors, and construction teams across multiple regions and configurations.
This is an opportunity to help solve first-of-a-kind engineering challenges while gaining exposure to the full product and production lifecycle, from early design through field verification.
What You’ll Do
Develop 2D layouts and parametric models for modular integration facilities, including bay sizing, material staging, platform space, and production capacity.
- Analyze production rates and work with trade partners to improve 5S layouts, material flow, equipment usage, and staging strategies.
- Simulate, evaluate, and optimize assembly methods and installation sequences to improve constructability, repeatability, and crew capacity.
- Develop Product Maps, Product Production Plans, and Process Maps for first-of-a-kind products and production processes.
- Support the concurrent design of products and the processes used to manufacture, assemble, and install them.
Spend time at construction sites verifying assembly logic, refining designs, and bringing field lessons back into future product and process improvements.
You’ll Be Successful Here If
You have a degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
- You have hands-on experience with SolidWorks, including parametric and assembly modeling.
- You are familiar with Revit or BIM environments.
- You understand manufacturing principles such as DFMA, 5S, assembly sequencing, and material flow.
- You enjoy working across design, engineering, construction, and vendor teams.
- You are willing to travel to construction sites for field verification.
You are self-directed, take ownership of your work, and can manage priorities and deliverables without constant oversight.

Production Engineer Jobs in San Francisco: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a production engineer job in San Francisco?
Target San Francisco's strongest hiring sectors: semiconductor and hardware companies in SoMa, biotech manufacturers in Mission Bay, and cloud infrastructure teams in the Financial District. Hands-on experience with yield optimization, process control, or reliability engineering stands out here. Networking through local IEEE chapters and Bay Area manufacturing meetups gives candidates a real edge in a market where referrals move faster than cold applications.
Which companies hire production engineers in San Francisco?
San Francisco production engineer roles are posted by CRUSOE, HARVEY, and FluidStack and others right now, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. The local market skews toward high-tech hardware firms, biotech device manufacturers, and software-defined infrastructure companies, many of which maintain production and reliability engineering teams directly in the city rather than offshoring them to the wider Bay Area.
Are there remote production engineer jobs in San Francisco?
Yes, though availability depends heavily on the role type: hands-on process and manufacturing positions rarely go fully remote, while reliability, DevOps-adjacent, and analytical production engineering roles are far more flexible. About 87% of production engineer openings tied to San Francisco are remote or hybrid as of August 2026. The most remote-friendly work in this market tends to be software production engineering at cloud and SaaS companies based in SoMa and the Financial District.
How can I get a production engineer job in San Francisco with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path in San Francisco is targeting associate or junior production engineer roles at mid-size hardware and biotech startups in Mission Bay and Dogpatch, which hire more entry-level talent than large established manufacturers. Internships at UCSF-affiliated medtech companies or contract roles at semiconductor firms in SoMa build the hands-on process experience local employers prioritize. A strong capstone project demonstrating yield analysis or process improvement is noticed in this market.
Which industries hire the most production engineers in San Francisco?
Most production engineer openings in San Francisco sit in Technology & Software, Science & Research, and Government & Public Sector, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. San Francisco's concentration of hardware startups, biotech device manufacturers in Mission Bay, and cloud infrastructure companies creates consistent demand across both physical process engineering and software reliability engineering, making the city's market broader than most coastal metros of comparable size.
