Professional Engineer Jobs in Austin: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a professional engineer job in Austin?
Target Austin's semiconductor, civil infrastructure, and energy sectors first, where PE demand is most consistent. The Domain and Mueller districts concentrate tech and engineering-driven employers, while the city's ongoing transportation and utility expansion keeps civil and structural PEs in steady demand. Candidates with experience in water systems, highway design, or chip-fab facility engineering hold a clear edge. Networking through Austin's local ASCE and IEEE chapters also connects you directly to active hiring managers.
Which companies hire professional engineers in Austin?
Companies currently hiring professional engineers in Austin include St. David's HealthCare, Ascension, and The University of Texas at Austin, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Austin's employer mix runs from large semiconductor manufacturers and utility providers to mid-size civil and environmental consulting firms serving the city's rapid infrastructure growth.
Are there remote professional engineer jobs in Austin?
Yes, though remote availability is limited for roles requiring site visits, inspections, or hands-on lab work, while analytical, design, and review-heavy positions are more remote-compatible. About 5% of professional engineer openings tied to Austin are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting broader industry norms. Positions in systems engineering, electrical design, and project review tend to offer the most flexibility within Austin-based teams.
How can I get a professional engineer job in Austin with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path in Austin is through an EIT or junior engineer role at a civil or environmental consulting firm serving the city's infrastructure pipeline. Austin-area engineering consultancies regularly hire recent graduates for transportation, stormwater, and utility projects tied to the city's growth. Targeting firms with active TxDOT or City of Austin contracts gives you exposure to licensed PEs who can mentor you toward your own PE licensure, making you a long-term investment for the employer.
Which industries hire the most professional engineers in Austin?
Austin professional engineer roles concentrate in Healthcare & Medical Services, Education, and Technology & Software, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Austin's sustained population growth, active semiconductor campus construction, and expanding utility infrastructure keep demand across those sectors consistently above the national average for PEs.
