Regional Planner Jobs in Alabama: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a regional planner in Alabama?
Most regional planner positions in Alabama require at minimum a bachelor's degree in urban planning, geography, or a related field, though a master's degree is preferred for senior roles at state agencies and MPOs. Alabama does not administer its own state planning license, but employers widely expect or prefer the American Institute of Certified Planners credential, earned through the AICP exam administered by the American Planning Association after meeting education and experience requirements.
Which companies hire regional planners in Alabama?
Employers hiring regional planners in Alabama right now include Lockheed Martin, Boeing, and Goldbelt, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Alabama's mix of state transportation agencies, metropolitan planning organizations, and large engineering consulting firms makes it one of the more consistent markets in the Southeast for planners at multiple levels.
Which Alabama cities have the most regional planner jobs?
The cities with the most regional planner openings in Alabama are Huntsville, Mobile, and Calvert. Birmingham leads because it anchors the state's largest MPO and hosts major engineering consulting offices, Huntsville's rapid infrastructure and defense-driven growth creates steady demand for transportation and land use planners, and Montgomery draws openings through its concentration of state agency offices including ALDOT headquarters.
Are there remote regional planner jobs in Alabama?
Yes, but they're less common than in purely desk-based fields, since regional planning work often involves site visits, public meetings, and in-person coordination with local government clients. About 6% of regional planner openings tied to Alabama are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, with remote arrangements most frequently available for data analysis, GIS mapping, and report writing tasks rather than community engagement or fieldwork.
How can I get hired as a regional planner in Alabama with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying to associate or junior planner roles at Alabama's metropolitan planning organizations, such as the Regional Planning Commission of Greater Birmingham or the Huntsville Metropolitan Planning Organization, which regularly bring on candidates with planning degrees but limited professional experience. Internships through accredited planning programs at Auburn University or the University of Alabama often convert to full-time offers. Candidates with GIS skills or experience in adjacent roles like transportation engineering technician or land use analyst have a clear advantage when applying to consulting firms and ALDOT.
Where can I find and apply to regional planner jobs in Alabama?
You can find and apply to regional planner jobs in Alabama on Migrate Mate, which lists current Alabama openings updated in real time. Search the listings, identify the roles that fit your experience and preferred location, and apply directly to the ones that match. No sign-up is required to see the openings.
