Regional Planner Jobs in Missouri: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a regional planner in Missouri?
Most regional planner positions in Missouri require at least a bachelor's degree in urban or regional planning, public policy, or a related field, though a master's degree is common for mid-level and senior roles. Missouri does not issue a state-specific planner license, so employers instead look for the American Institute of Certified Planners credential, administered by the American Institute of Certified Planners, which requires a combination of education, professional experience, and a written exam.
Which companies hire regional planners in Missouri?
Companies currently hiring regional planners in Missouri include Wealthbridge Financial, Cushman & Wakefield, and Washington University in St. Louis, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Missouri's mix of metropolitan planning organizations, county governments, and infrastructure consulting firms means openings appear across both the public and private sectors throughout the state.
Which Missouri cities have the most regional planner jobs?
St. Louis, Kansas City, and Springfield account for the most regional planner openings in Missouri. Kansas City and St. Louis lead because both metros have large metropolitan planning organizations, active public works departments, and a concentration of engineering and consulting firms driving steady private-sector demand alongside government hiring.
Are there remote regional planner jobs in Missouri?
Yes, but they're limited. Regional planning work often requires attending public hearings, conducting site visits, and coordinating with local government offices in person, which keeps most roles at least partially on-site. About 70% of regional planner openings tied to Missouri are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, with research-heavy and GIS analysis roles being the most likely to offer flexible or remote arrangements.
How can I get hired as a regional planner in Missouri with little or no experience?
The most direct entry path is applying for planning technician or planning assistant roles at Missouri county planning departments or mid-size municipalities, which regularly hire candidates with a bachelor's degree and no prior professional planning experience. Metropolitan planning organizations such as the Mid-America Regional Council and the East-West Gateway Council of Governments occasionally offer internships and entry-level analyst positions. Building a portfolio with GIS project samples and completing coursework that satisfies AICP eligibility requirements gives early-career candidates a measurable edge.
Where can I find and apply to regional planner jobs in Missouri?
