Regional Planner Jobs in Oregon: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a regional planner in Oregon?
Most regional planner roles in Oregon require at least a bachelor's degree in urban or regional planning, though many government and MPO positions prefer a master's degree. Oregon does not issue a state planner license, but employers strongly value AICP certification through the American Institute of Certified Planners, which requires a combination of education, qualifying work experience, and passing an exam. Familiarity with Oregon's statewide land use planning goals is a practical requirement for most public sector roles.
Which companies hire regional planners in Oregon?
Oregon regional planner roles are posted by ASM, Nike, and Amazon and others right now, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Oregon's mix of large metropolitan planning organizations, state agencies, and private consulting firms means openings appear across both public and private sector employers throughout the state.
Which Oregon cities have the most regional planner jobs?
Portland, Beaverton, and Hillsboro are the Oregon cities with the most regional planner openings. Portland leads because it is home to Metro, the regional government overseeing the tri-county area, as well as the City of Portland's planning bureau and numerous consulting firms, while Salem concentrates state agency positions and Eugene anchors Lane County and University of Oregon-affiliated planning work.
Are there remote regional planner jobs in Oregon?
Yes, but they're less common than in purely desk-based fields, since regional planning regularly involves site visits, public hearings, and coordination with local jurisdictions. About 73% of regional planner openings tied to Oregon are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, reflecting a growing acceptance of flexible arrangements post-pandemic. Research, policy writing, GIS analysis, and report drafting are the tasks most frequently performed remotely.
How can I get hired as a regional planner in Oregon with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is an internship or entry-level analyst role with an Oregon city or county planning department, where new graduates apply planning theory to real permit reviews and long-range projects. Metro and the City of Portland both run structured intern and junior planner programs. Moving laterally from roles such as GIS analyst, code enforcement officer, or urban design intern also opens doors. Completing coursework or a graduate certificate focused on Oregon land use law and earning student AICP membership signals commitment to Oregon-specific practice.
Where can I find and apply to regional planner jobs in Oregon?
You can find and apply to regional planner jobs in Oregon on Migrate Mate, which lists current Oregon openings from government agencies, metropolitan planning organizations, and private consulting firms.
