Reliability Engineer Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a reliability engineer in California?
The most direct path is a bachelor's degree in mechanical, electrical, or systems engineering followed by early-career roles in quality, test, or manufacturing engineering where reliability methods are applied. California does not require a state license specifically for reliability engineers, but many senior positions at utilities and defense contractors value or require a Professional Engineer license issued through the California Board for Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors, and Geologists. Earning a Certified Reliability Engineer credential from the American Society for Quality strengthens any application.
Which companies hire reliability engineers in California?
Employers hiring reliability engineers in California right now include Apple, NVIDIA, and Applied Materials, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's concentration of aerospace primes, semiconductor fabs, and large investor-owned utilities creates steady, recurring demand across the state.
Which California cities have the most reliability engineer jobs?
San Francisco, Santa Clara, and San Jose have the most reliability engineer openings in California. Los Angeles and San Diego anchor demand through the state's dense aerospace and defense industrial base, while San Jose and the broader Bay Area drive openings through semiconductor, clean energy, and enterprise hardware companies headquartered there.
Are there remote reliability engineer jobs in California?
Yes, but they're rare. Reliability engineering is inherently hands-on, involving physical testing, factory audits, and on-site failure investigations that require presence. About 21% of reliability engineer openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and those positions tend to concentrate on the modeling, documentation, and standards-development side of the role rather than lab or production work.
How can I get hired as a reliability engineer in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is through a quality engineer, test engineer, or manufacturing engineer role at a California aerospace or semiconductor company, then building toward reliability work by applying FMEA and root-cause analysis on the job. Northrop Grumman, Lockheed Martin, and Broadcom all run structured new-graduate engineering programs in California that rotate through reliability functions. A Certified Reliability Engineer associate designation from the American Society for Quality or a completed capstone project using Weibull analysis gives a candidate a concrete edge over other new graduates.
Where can I find and apply to reliability engineer jobs in California?
You can find and apply to reliability engineer jobs in California on Migrate Mate, which lists current California openings from employers actively hiring. Find the roles that fit your experience and location, then apply directly to each one.
