Tips for Your Reliability Engineer Job Search
Quantify uptime and MTBF improvements
Recruiters in reliability roles respond to numbers. Replace vague claims with specific outcomes: the percentage reduction in unplanned downtime you drove, the MTBF improvement you documented, or the maintenance cost savings tied to a program you led.
List certifications prominently on your resume
CRE, CMRP, and CAMA credentials filter a lot of applicant tracking systems before a human reads your resume. Put them in a dedicated certifications section near the top, not buried in education or the final line of your document.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists reliability engineer openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Filter openings by industry asset class
Reliability engineering in a refinery is a different role than in a fab or a power plant. Target openings whose job descriptions match the asset class you know best, whether that is rotating equipment, static equipment, electrical systems, or instrumentation.
Prepare a structured RCA walkthrough for interviews
Most reliability engineer interviews include a technical scenario where you walk through how you would investigate a recurring failure. Practice narrating a real root cause analysis you led, covering data collection, fault tree logic, corrective action, and verification.
Negotiate scope as well as title and compensation
Before accepting an offer, ask specifically what the CMMS looks like, whether you own the PM program or inherit it, and how capital projects interface with reliability. These details determine whether you can do the work you were hired for.
Reliability Engineer Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most reliability engineers?
The companies hiring the most reliability engineers right now include Apple, MongoDB, and NVIDIA, with the largest share of openings in California, Texas, and New York, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Demand tends to concentrate in states with large refining, utility, and advanced manufacturing footprints.
How many reliability engineer jobs are remote?
About 25% of reliability engineer openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, which is lower than most engineering disciplines because the role often requires hands-on equipment access. Remote opportunities are most common in reliability data analyst roles, condition monitoring program management, and corporate asset strategy positions that do not require regular plant floor presence.
How do you become a reliability engineer?
Start with a bachelor's degree in a relevant engineering discipline, then gain plant or field experience in maintenance, operations, or process engineering where you work directly with equipment failures. Build competency in reliability tools like FMEA and RCM through on-the-job projects or formal coursework. Earning a CRE credential or CMRP certification after accumulating documented work experience is the most common path to a dedicated reliability engineering title.
Can you get a reliability engineer job with little experience?
Entry-level reliability engineer roles do exist, and they typically look for candidates who can demonstrate analytical thinking about failure modes even without years of plant experience. Co-op or internship work in maintenance or process engineering, a senior capstone project involving failure analysis, or hands-on lab coursework in tribology or vibration all translate well. Targeting smaller manufacturers or utilities is often more effective early in your career than pursuing large petrochemical employers who require extensive asset-specific backgrounds.
What does the reliability engineer interview process look like?
Most reliability engineer interview processes include an initial recruiter screen, a technical phone or video interview with the hiring manager focused on your failure analysis methodology, and an on-site or virtual panel with operations, maintenance, and engineering leads. Expect scenario-based questions that ask you to walk through an RCA you have conducted or explain how you would build a PM program from scratch. Some employers add a written case study or ask you to review a sample failure report and present your findings.
Where can I find and apply to reliability engineer jobs?
You can find and apply to reliability engineer jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from across the United States. Find the roles that fit your background and apply directly to each listing without being redirected to a separate platform.
