Tips for Your Infrastructure Security Engineer Job Search
Tailor your resume to each environment
Infrastructure security roles differ sharply between cloud-native shops, hybrid environments, and on-prem data centers. Call out the exact stack you've secured, whether that's AWS VPCs, Azure landing zones, or Cisco-based networks, so hiring managers can immediately place your experience.
List certifications in a visible section
CISSP, CCNP Security, and CompTIA Security+ are screened at the resume stage, not the interview. Put active certifications and their renewal dates near the top of your resume so automated filters and recruiters don't overlook them before your application is reviewed.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists infrastructure security engineer openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Target companies with complex infrastructure
Heavily regulated industries like financial services, healthcare systems, and federal contractors post infrastructure security roles more consistently than most. Filter your search by sector to find openings where your compliance experience with NIST, FedRAMP, or HIPAA controls is a direct match.
Prepare a concrete incident response example
Technical panels for this role almost always include a scenario question about a real or simulated breach. Walk interviewers through your actual detection, containment, and post-incident steps, naming the tools you used, rather than describing a generic process.
Negotiate the scope of your environment
Before accepting an offer, clarify the number of systems you'll own, whether you'll have a dedicated team, and what the on-call rotation looks like. These factors affect daily workload as much as base pay does and are easier to negotiate before you start.
Infrastructure Security Engineer Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most infrastructure security engineers?
The companies hiring the most infrastructure security engineers right now include Walmart, OpenAI, and Scale AI, with the largest share of openings in California, Texas, and New York, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Defense contractors, large financial institutions, and major cloud providers tend to post the highest volume of these roles consistently.
How many infrastructure security engineer jobs are remote?
About 37% of infrastructure security engineer openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, though positions requiring access to classified systems or on-prem hardware are almost always on-site. Cloud security and policy-focused roles within the discipline tend to offer the most remote flexibility.
How do you become an infrastructure security engineer?
Start with a foundation in networking or systems administration, then build security knowledge through certifications like CompTIA Security+ or CCNP Security. Gain hands-on experience securing servers, networks, or cloud environments in an IT or junior security role. Progressively take on responsibilities like vulnerability management, firewall configuration, and incident response to move into a dedicated infrastructure security position.
Can you get hired as an infrastructure security engineer with little experience?
Yes, but you'll need to demonstrate technical hands-on work beyond coursework. Build a home lab where you configure firewalls, set up a SIEM, or simulate attacks and defenses. Contribute to open-source security tooling or document your projects publicly. Entry-level roles often use titles like junior security engineer or security analyst and grow into infrastructure-focused responsibilities.
What does the infrastructure security engineer interview process look like?
Most processes include a recruiter screen, a technical phone interview covering networking and security fundamentals, and a panel or take-home exercise involving a real-world scenario such as a network architecture review or incident response simulation. Final rounds often include a conversation with a senior engineer or team lead focused on how you've handled past security challenges.
Where can I find and apply to infrastructure security engineer jobs?
You can find and apply to infrastructure security engineer jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from across the United States. Find roles that match your background and apply directly to each listing without any extra steps.
