Tips for Your Remote Firmware Job Search
Tailor your resume for embedded depth
List the specific microcontrollers, RTOSes, and communication protocols you've worked with rather than generic terms like 'embedded systems.' Hiring managers scan for STM32, FreeRTOS, CAN bus, and SPI because those are the tools their team uses daily.
Show hardware bring-up experience clearly
Firmware roles often screen for candidates who've taken a board from bare silicon to running code. If you've done bring-up work, call it out by name in your resume and describe the toolchain, debugger, and any silicon errata you navigated.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists firmware openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Target job postings by target architecture
Filter your search by the processor architecture you know best, such as ARM Cortex-M, RISC-V, or AVR. Roles built around a specific architecture move fast and rarely require the full ramp time that generalist postings do.
Prepare a code sample or project teardown
Many firmware interviews ask you to walk through real code before any technical screen. Have a short, well-commented driver or state machine ready to share, and be prepared to explain every design decision including interrupt handling and memory constraints.
Negotiate scope, not just compensation
After an offer, ask which hardware platform you'd own first and whether the role includes schematic review responsibilities. Clarifying ownership early prevents situations where firmware engineers spend months debugging undocumented hardware without the authority to flag design issues upstream.
Remote Firmware Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a remote firmware job?
Target companies that already run distributed teams, since they hire remotely by default and know how to onboard someone they never meet in person. Remote firmware employers screen hard for self-direction and clear written communication on top of the core skills, so show evidence you can own work without someone over your shoulder. Apply to the openings above that match your experience.
Which companies hire remote firmwares?
Remote firmware roles are posted by Nvidia, UST, and Cornelis Networks and others right now, based on current remote listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Remote-first firms and large companies running distributed teams post the most remote firmware roles.
Can you get a remote firmware job with no experience?
Yes, but it is harder than an on-site role, because remote work expects you to operate independently from the start. Entry-level remote firmware openings do exist, especially at remote-first companies, and a portfolio of real work helps more than a long resume. Applying broadly to the roles that fit improves your odds.
Do you need a degree for remote firmware jobs?
Not always. Many employers hire remote firmwares on demonstrated skills and prior work rather than a specific degree, though some larger companies still prefer one. Showing relevant results matters more than a credential for most remote firmware roles.
Which industries hire the most remote firmwares?
Remote firmware roles concentrate in Electronics & Hardware and Law & Legal Services, based on current remote listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. These sectors run distributed teams and hire firmwares remotely most consistently.
