Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced Lead GIS Integration Engineer to drive the technical design, architecture, and delivery of a Next-Generation GIS Program. This role is critical in integrating legacy Smallworld GIS and modern Esri Utility Network data into an Advanced Distribution Management System (ADMS).
The ideal candidate will bridge enterprise GIS, real-time Operational Technology (OT), and cloud-native data engineering by establishing scalable, event-driven data pipelines within an AWS environment to ensure seamless synchronization during a multi-year transformation.
Key Responsibilities
GIS Integration & Architecture
-
Interface Design: Lead the architecture of high-availability integrations between Smallworld, Esri ArcGIS Enterprise (Utility Network), and the ADMS platform.
-
Event-Driven Pipelines: Design and implement real-time data streams using Apache Kafka (MSK) for incremental network model updates and spatial asset changes.
-
Model Reconciliation: Resolve data model conflicts, schema mismatches, and business rule differences when translating GIS connectivity into ADMS topology.
-
Standards Enforcement: Define and enforce integration standards, data contracts, and API design patterns (REST/SOAP).
Data Engineering & Migration Cutover
-
Spatial ETL Pipelines: Build end-to-end ETL pipelines using FME Form/Flow and Python, including automated deployment and auditing.
-
Coexistence Strategy: Enable dual-source data ingestion to support phased migration (handling active circuits from both Smallworld and Esri simultaneously).
-
Runbook Execution: Develop migration runbooks, validation scripts, and automated rollback procedures for production cutovers.
Cloud & DevOps
-
Cloud Infrastructure: Design and manage AWS infrastructure for GIS and streaming workloads (EC2, S3, RDS/Aurora, Lambda, ECS/EKS, API Gateway).
-
CI/CD Automation: Implement CI/CD pipelines and branching strategies using Git alongside Infrastructure as Code (Terraform or CloudFormation).
-
Observability: Monitor pipeline health, establish alerting via CloudWatch, and lead incident response for production systems.
Required Qualifications
-
Experience: 8+ years in GIS engineering, system integration, or spatial data engineering, with 3+ years in a technical leadership role.
-
Domain Expertise: Experience delivering GIS-to-ADMS/OMS integrations (e.g., GE, Schneider Electric, Oracle, Hitachi/ABB) within electric or gas utilities.
-
Data Standards: Strong understanding of CIM (IEC 61968 & 61970) standards for utility data exchange.
-
Streaming & ETL: Hands-on experience with Apache Kafka (topic design, producers/consumers, schema registry) and FME Form/Flow.
-
Programming: Advanced Python skills using spatial libraries (GeoPandas, Shapely, Fiona, ArcPy) and API frameworks (FastAPI).
-
Databases: Expertise in PostgreSQL/PostGIS and Oracle Spatial.
Preferred Qualifications
-
AWS Certified Solutions Architect certification.
-
Experience with Smallworld CASE tools or Esri Utility Network configuration.
-
Experience with automated testing frameworks for spatial data (e.g., Pytest).
-
Familiarity with Agile/Scrum methodologies.
Technical Environment
Core Systems: GE Smallworld, Esri ArcGIS Enterprise 11.1+ (Utility Network), ADMS
Streaming & Cloud: Apache Kafka / AWS MSK, AWS services (Lambda, S3, RDS, EKS)
Development & DevOps: Python (GeoPandas, FastAPI), FME Form/Flow, Terraform, Git, CI/CD
Work Environment & Travel
Location: Hybrid / Remote Eligible (Charlotte, NC preferred)
Travel: Up to 20% for onsite workshops, stakeholder meetings, and critical migration cutovers

Tips for Your Remote Gis Specialist Job Search
Tailor your resume to specific GIS software
Hiring managers scan for named tools, so list every platform you've used: ArcGIS Pro, QGIS, FME, ArcGIS Online, and any extensions like Network Analyst or Spatial Analyst. Generic phrases like 'proficient in GIS software' get filtered out before a human ever reads your resume.
Lead with your geodatabase and scripting skills
Many gis specialist postings now require Python or SQL alongside spatial data skills. If you've written scripts for geoprocessing, automated map production, or managed enterprise geodatabases, put that near the top of your resume, not buried in a skills list at the bottom.
Target openings by sector to match your data experience
GIS work differs sharply across sectors. Utilities roles focus on network datasets and asset management, while environmental consulting prioritizes raster analysis and field data integration. Filter openings by industry so your sector-specific project experience matches what the employer actually works on.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists gis specialist openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Build a portfolio of public-facing map projects
Attach a link to an ArcGIS Online story map, a GitHub repository with geoprocessing scripts, or a PDF portfolio showing finished deliverables. Interviewers for gis specialist roles respond to visible work far more than to descriptions of past duties.
Prepare to walk through a technical scenario live
Many gis specialist interviews include a scenario question: given a dataset or a client problem, how would you approach it? Practice talking through your spatial analysis decisions out loud, including your choice of projection, data sources, and any validation steps you'd run before delivering results.
Remote Gis Specialist Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a remote gis specialist job?
Target companies that already run distributed teams, since they hire remotely by default and know how to onboard someone they never meet in person. Remote gis specialist employers screen hard for self-direction and clear written communication on top of the core skills, so show evidence you can own work without someone over your shoulder. Apply to the openings above that match your experience.
Which companies hire remote gis specialists?
Employers currently hiring remote gis specialists include ARDENT, Accenture Federal Services, and Hitachi Global Air Power Us, per current remote listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Remote-first firms and large companies running distributed teams post the most remote gis specialist roles.
Can you get a remote gis specialist job with no experience?
Yes, but it is harder than an on-site role, because remote work expects you to operate independently from the start. Entry-level remote gis specialist openings do exist, especially at remote-first companies, and a portfolio of real work helps more than a long resume. Applying broadly to the roles that fit improves your odds.
Do you need a degree for remote gis specialist jobs?
Not always. Many employers hire remote gis specialists on demonstrated skills and prior work rather than a specific degree, though some larger companies still prefer one. Showing relevant results matters more than a credential for most remote gis specialist roles.
Which industries hire the most remote gis specialists?
Most remote gis specialist openings sit in Consulting & Professional Services, Manufacturing, and Technology & Software, per current remote listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. These sectors run distributed teams and hire gis specialists remotely most consistently.
